At Milan’s mesmerizing Straf hotel, architect and artist Vincenzo de Cotiis has achieved his goal of creating a visually striking alternative to standard hotel design. Known also as a fashion designer, de Cotiis reflects his unique taste in his design concept, which strives for individuality in the materials used. At Bar Straf, de Cotiis has created a sort of spatial overwriting by using a hyper-decorative style. The setting brings us back to essentials, emotions, and art, blending everyday life with the future.
MADE BY ORIGINALS
After managing her father Manlio Bertazzoni’s Grand Hotel et de Milan since the late 1960s, Daniela Bertazzoni and her daughter, Sarah Mancino, took over the Straf hotel in 2004. While the hotel’s design is masculine and moody, the mother and daughter duo benefit from familial instinct and feminine intuition in their managing of the hotel and their hands-on approach. “We are here every day,” says Daniela, “our presence is truly the secret to success.”
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
Part recycled and part new, the building that was once a 19th-century Milanese palazzo now plays host to made-to-measure rooms that showcase a spectacle of textures and a cool industrial aesthetic. Warm artworks and a mix of cement, bronze, and gunmetal play off each other perfectly to top off the eclecticism.
