Converted from a collection of period Victorian townhouses into a stylish “couture” hotel, Blakes draws celebrities and designers to the aristocratic neighborhood of South Kensington and Chelsea. The hotel, with its 45 rooms and suites, offers a world of exoticism and grandeur. Behind its black Victorian façade, lay a provocative fusion of eastern and western styles. A short taxi ride from Harrods and Knightsbridge, easily accessible by underground, and just a five-minute walk can take you to the fashionable Old Brompton Road or Kings Road, the hotel is also close to several noted museums and London’s famous Royal Parks, which include Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and The Royal Albert Hall.
MADE BY ORIGINALS
Once a bond girl, now a London socialite—Anouska Hempel has made a name for herself through a number of successful ventures, including a career that spans architecture, furniture, fashion, and garden design. Hempel stepped into the hospitality industry with Blakes Hotel, which is considered to be the first luxury boutique hotel in the world.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
The hotel is housed behind a row of black Victorian townhouse façades on a corner position in London’s South Kensington neighborhood. Designer Anouska Hempel’s lavish interiors borrow inspiration from Asia and the Middle East, with artifacts and trinkets from her travels adorning the rooms and public spaces. Highlights include a hand-stenciled wooden floor, four-poster beds, and a courtyard cocktail bar that offers a soothing respite from London’s freneticism.
