THE HOTEL The perfect base from which to explore the wonders of Iceland, the 44-room ION Adventure Hotel has the ability to transform itself into a personal theater, where guests are the audience and the island’s incomparable natural landscape is the show. With a mellow mix of concrete chic and earthy ambiance, combined with the warm accents of locally salvaged driftwood and lava, the ION successfully uses sustainability as a design tool.
MADE BY ORIGINALS Sigurlaug Sverrisdottir is a traveler, explorer, and entrepreneur: the ideal traits for an adventure hotelier in rural Iceland. In 2013, she created ION Adventure Hotel along with her husband Halldor Hafsteinsson, who was the CFO of an Icelandic airline. Sverrisdottir boldly expresses her knowledge and experience through the property’s luxury-meets-adventure concept.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN A former inn for the employees of the Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant, the property’s original building lent stylistic inspiration to the newly built structure, which protrudes from Mount Hengill on stilts. With the help of Santa Monica-based design studio Minarc, ION’s interiors are light-filled spaces of natural materials, clean-cut lines, and unobtrusive colors, with fair-trade organic linens, wooden floors, and the odd bit of driftwood that mirrors the property’s demeanor.
