Wuxi Shuofang Airport (WUX) can be reached by car in 30 minutes, and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) is about a 90-minute drive away.
Discover the cradle of Wu culture. Historic Suzhou is famous for its stone bridges, pagodas, and classical gardens. The ancient Lingering Garden is one of China’s most famous gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This striking park also has many interesting buildings. The classic Ming-style Humble Administrator’s Garden is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprising a pond, water features, pavilions, terraces, chambers, and towers. Named after a famous monk and once one of China’s ten most celebrated temples, Hashan Temple’s main structures are the Main Hall, Circular Gallery, Sutra Library, Bell Tower, and Maple River Tower. Other sites worth seeing include the Twin Pagodas, the North Temple Pagoda, the Mysterious Taoist Pagoda, the Suzhou Silk Museum, and nearby ancient towns.
Look closer at traditional entertainment, especially performances of Pingtan, Kun, or Suzhou opera—the “three flowers” of Suzhou’s cultural history. Delight in Suzhou’s renowned embroidery, recognizable by its colorful goldfish and cat motifs. Other terrific local handcrafted items include Suzhou fans, brocade, silk tapestries, writing bushes, Chinese musical instruments, and wood-engraved pictures. Fall visitors should try the famous hairy crabs that come from Lake Taihu and Lake Yangcheng.
