Situated on the west coast of India and formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra, and the country’s financial, commercial, and entertainment centre. The Four Points by Sheraton Mumbai, International Airport is conveniently located in the Samihita
Industrial Estate, just a half-kilometre away from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM).
Discover the city’s two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Elephanta Caves. The gothic-style Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, previously known as Victoria Terminus, features carved stone friezes, stained glass windows, and flying buttresses. Elephanta Caves, located on Gharapuri Island in Mumbai’s harbour, showcases a splendid symmetry of Indian rock-cut architecture. Just before catching the ferry to the caves, visitors can spot the Gateway of India. Built in 1911, this 26-metre high, triple-arch gateway is an iconic symbol of Mumbai. The exquisite Flora Fountain is another Mumbai landmark, depicting a Roman goddess. Dhobi Ghat is a fascinating, colourful place where Mumbai’s laundry is washed by hundreds of Dhobis by hand, on concrete sinks and dried in the sun.
Mumbai is home to wonderful museums and art galleries, including the Prince of Wales Museum, which contains ancient Indus Valley artefacts dating back four millennia, priceless Tibetan bronzes, and more than 2,000 miniature paintings from India’s art schools. The renowned Jehangir Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) are both worthy of a visit.
For a bit of action, head to the Mahalakshmi Race Course. Racing season starts in mid-November and ends the last week of April. The Indian Derby is also held there, on the first Sunday in February. More entertainment can be found at India’s premier cultural institution, the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), which presents more than 500 events each year. For avid shoppers, Mumbai has everything from antiques and designer clothes to Indian handicrafts. Visit Chor Bazaar, one of India’s largest flea markets; the famous Crawford Market, officially known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market; the popular Colaba Causeway; and the fashionable area known as Kemp’s Corner.
