Straddling the Xiang River and nicknamed “Bright Pearl in Southern China,” Hengyang is the second-largest city in China’s Hunan Province. The Four Points by Sheraton Hengyang is conveniently located in the Yanfeng District. Offices, shops, and a retail mall are just steps away, and the Hengyang Bai Sha Zhou Industrial Zone is only 7 kilometers from our hotel. Shenzhen is just a 2.5-hour high-speed train ride away, and both Guangzhou and Wuhan can be reached in 90 minutes.
Step out to explore Hengyang’s mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and beautiful landscapes filled with fir trees and bamboo. See Mount Heng, one of the Five Great Mountains in China. A 90-minute drive from the hotel, it has several ancient religious sites, including the oldest temple in southern China. Visitors can also take a cable car ride to the top of the mountain. The scenic area of Cai Lun Bamboo Sea has stone forests, bamboo, caves, and more. Home to geese, cranes, egrets, and other birds, the Jiangkou Niaozhou Nature Reserve is another popular attraction.
Hire a boat to cruise around the lake at West Lake Park. Take an exhilarating rafting trip down one of the rivers. Soak in one of the nearby hot springs. Admire the cultural relics in the museum located at Yueping Park. The park also features pavilions, bridges, pebble-paved paths, gardens, and a zoo. The centuries-old Shigu (Stone Drum) Academy is also worthy of a visit.
For a taste of the arts, attend a shadow opera or fiddle ballad performance. Browse the shops for local handicrafts, including silk umbrellas and bamboo carvings. Sip some Huzhijiu Hunan wine and sample spicy food. Called xiang cai due to its proximity to the Xiang River, it is one of China’s world-famous eight cuisines.
