I had stayed at this property for work 3 years ago on about 8 different occasions. I've also stayed at virtually all of the other SPG properties in central New Orleans.
This property was undergoing its transition from a W to a Le Meridien. We were notified of this change about 2 weeks before our stay -- too late to change anything, and so we figured it wouldn't be too much of a problem. But it was.
As a Lifetime Gold SPG member, I was surprised to find out that 2 of the 4 rooms in my block were not available for check in...at 9pm. The reason given to us was that the housekeeping manager had not yet approved them. After waiting for 20 minutes, the front desk person offered us drink coupons for the bar. The "bartender" did not know what a sazerac was (in New Orleans, of all places), and also did not know the difference between "neat" and "on the rocks".
After returning much later in the night and attempting to check in, I was given the room key to one of the 2 rooms which I had booked, and my friends sorted out the other room. After I got up to my room, the bags which were supposed to be sent to my room (since I couldn't check in earlier) were not there. The door opened 5 minutes later with my friends -- the front desk person had given them keys to the same room. After another 20 minutes, she "finds" the other room I had booked, and we go there.
Every other hotel annoyance problem of course happened -- we arrived to a room without toiletries or toilet paper. Of course, the telephone was also out. After calling the front desk from my cell phone, they bring these things up after about 30 minutes.
What took the cake though, was the used contact lens that was left sitting on the counter. My roommate and I didn't figure this out until the end of the weekend -- when we realized that neither of us wear contacts.
In over 100 stays with SPG over the last 5-6 years, this was most definitely the worst stay I have ever had. It's a shame too, as this used to be a very good property.

This hotel is currently under construction to become a Le Meridien. Good thing. I used to LOVE this hotel. But, on this visit, I noticed how crowded and closely spaced the doors are--meaning you can hear every neighbor come and go. I could hear a bit of the construction on floors above me. I also noticed all sorts of scuff marks on the walls, leaving the room to just look dirty, ill-cared for, poorly appointed. But the worst was my shower not working and my wake-up call never happening. These both could've been much worse situations. And when I called later to complain, the manager did offer a credit or points on my membership. I took the credit, because the room (and experience) was certainly not worth what I paid for it.

The check in was smooth and clerks were nice. The room was small! 3 people with 4 suitcases + carry ons for 5 days with no chairs, no dresser drawers no where to move around, a tiny closet...it just doesn't work guys!! It seemed like a by the hour rental!! The bathroom was less than desirable! The tub was dirty...get some Comet brand soap/scum cleaner...it works!!....The shelf that was under the sink was dusty...we really should have written a date in it!! We had to walk quite a distance to change hotels.

This hotel was lacking the basic amenities that one is accustom from a SPG property. There were no towels in the bathroom, and no water in the room. I hope this not the new SPG standard.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Notbestrate Expecting the best available rate, NOT TRUE
I booked my room thru a Wedding party booking, expecting the best available rate. NOT TRUE. By using AAA, I was able to aquire a 30% additional discount and was given a $25 food credit too. I was also billed for several mini bar items which i never touched. Plus, questions I asked at the front desk could not be answered. A check out kiosk or telephone check out would have given me more information about my bill than the front desk staff that has no authority or billing knowledge.

The rooms at this hotel are in desperate need of an update. They are small, oddly shaped, worn, and it shows. There is a plumbing problem as well. The pipes make noise all night, shower drains clog, but the shower pressure is excellent! The bathroom was dirty, the toilet was not flushed when I checked in, there was hair in the shower which was not mine, toilet seat would not stay up cosmetic mirror was filthy. You would think that the housekeeping staff would notice these things when they are cleaning the rooms and get them fixed. The other staff is excellent and tried to fix everything. This hotel is not worth 10,000 points a night.

I was not impressed with the rooms at the W Hotel in New Orleans. The bathroom is poorly designed in that there is no floor barrier between the shower and the rest of the bathroom so the entire floor gets wet as water drains across it. Also the shower head is only 5'6" or so off the ground, requiring most to duck to get under it. Also the closet is split into a lower and upper area, with the lower to be used for hanging clothes. Unfortunately the bar isn't far enough off the ground to prevent some items from touching the ground and getting wrinkled. Finally, the carpet was pretty wore out, as well as the furniture.
The common areas were nice, and the bed was as comfortable as you would expect from a W hotel. However, I would avoid this hotel and recommend staying at one of the other premium hotels in the local area.

Our room smelled like mildew, the carpet was dirty, brown, torn and damp. The bed linens were stained. I called the front desk to ask for an acceptable room. We were shown 3 rooms that were in the same or whose condition. One room had ripped upholstery with the filling exposed. We asked for assistance moving to a nearby w hotel but management was uninterested in helping us. We were refunded our money after midnight. Luckily we had a car. If not we would have been on the streets of New Orleans with luggage and without a hotel room. We finally checked into an acceptable competing hotel at 3am. I contacted W corporate office but have not received an official response in over 1 week. The W hotel used to be my go to hotel. I did not know that they had this type of property. Now I am very reluctant to book a W hotel in an unfamiliar location.

Sorry, but you guys really have dropped the ball. I can say this having worked with Starwood myself...
I understand that you are undergoing renovation and are changing from W to Le Meredien. However, a quality hotel (especially when remaining a part of the Starwood family) is able to operate in a way that the inconvenience for the guest is minimized. In this case, it appeared across the board that the staff really could care less, and there was no presence of management to be found...
This was my 4th visit to Tales of the Cocktail, and my third stay at the W on Poydras St.
Here are my comments -
- Towels in guest room had holes/tears.
- Cobwebs on the light fixtures
- Room was not vacuumed
- Half a roll of toilet paper in bathroom
- Window blinds were covered in dust.
- Most often, no employee present in the lobby
- AC & Water issues (although I was warned at check-in)
- Construction noise issues (although I was warned at check-in)
- Took 2 - 3 calls on avg. just to get thru to room service - regardless of time of day - no answer, nor apology for this.
- Again, no-one in lobby.
- Doorman sleeping/watching TV in an SUV parked in the entry. Stepped out and offered to help aftert I already hailed a cab to the airport and while lifting my own luggage.
For charging upwards of $250 a night for a reservation made over a month in advance, courtesy would be to advise the guest that there is construction going on and that there may be an inconvenience, thereby giving enough time to opt for alternate accommodations.
Having spent 3 nights there at a premium rate, all the Concierge offered was 5000 SPG points... That's not even half a night at any Starwood hotel...
Very disappointed this time, and will look at several other options in NOLA has to offer when coming to Tales 2015.

An update to my previous review: The positive points about this hotel are:
the small clean swimming pool,
the gym on the pool level is a good size,
the concierge service is friendly and knowledgeable, the car valets are fast and helpful,
the lobby is big with ample seating and two bars,
the location is just a few blocks from the French Quarter, about a 5 minute walk to all of the action.
If the rooms were refreshed this would be a great place to stay.

This was my first trip to New Orleans in over 20 years and the first time staying in a W hotel. The W on Poydras was great. Very friendly and attentive staff and very willing to help with any and all questions/requests that I had during this stay. Room was very comfortable and relaxing and I had a great view of the river from my King Cool Corner room. Easy access to the French Quarter and the River Walk. Could stand a little improvement on the TV reception with certain channels but it wasn't a big deal. Overall, I would highly recommend this W hotel to anyone that is looking for a great place to stay while in New Orleans.

The hotel was not as nice as I expected, but they are under renovations. Which is fine, but the hotel failed to make ANY mention of the construction prior to booking my stay or even when I checked in. From 9am to 6pm all day every day there was literally a jackhammer SOOO extremely loud above my room that I literally could not make a phone call, could not watch tv, couldn't lay in my room and relax, nothing. I cannot even express how insanely loud it was all day long every day. When I called the front desk to enquire, they essentially told me too bad. I insisted that I knew NOTHING about the construction prior to booking my stay and I most certainly would NEVER have booked that hotel if I had known upfront the condition of the hotel and the constant brain pounding noise I would have to endure the entire time. The staff made no apologies or any attempt to rectify the situation other than offering to send a beverage to my room. Absolutely unacceptable customer service and I feel like they duped me into staying there by concealing the fact that they were under full construction and my stay would be much less than comfortable. I was shocked for the W. I expected a very nice professional comfortable stay and it was a complete nightmare and I will never return, not because of the construction, but because of the complete lack of concern by customer service.

1. Cost...me and a few others booked our room at the same time for the same date, however, I paid $100 more, I assumed I paid for a suite maybe so I didn't make a fuss. That was far from the truth.
2. Room Comfort...the carpet was disgusting, there was no microwave and the mini fridge did not work and held a "puddle" of water inside. The shower faucet would not shut off completely so water ran CONSTANTLY. (NOT DRIPPING, RUNNING); The AC was not working properly, it kept the room at "ROOM TEMPERATURE", the thermostat showed 68° but it felt like 79°; the sheets had several small holes that were displayed upon entering the room.
3. Staff responsiveness...after viewing the room, my husband quickly notified the manager on duty, a microwave/fridge was quickly brought up to the room, and the sheets were changed. We were told an "engineer" would come up and check the bathroom and AC...never happened. We were told nothing could be done because the room had been "PREPAID" and was given "free parking", which costed us $50!! WOW what a thank-you after spending $250 for a room that was horrible to say the least.
4.Quality of Sleep...we tried closing the bathroom door to muffle the sound of running water, that didn't work. At around 8:30a (Sunday morning), our sleep ended due to sounds of construction going on at the hotel.
Maybe after the renovations this hotel will be up to par but as of NOW...STAY AWAY!! You'll be upset!!

it's okay for younger crowd - very noisy on week-end nights in lobby area whish is where they have the bar. restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch, not dinner. rooms are on small side but nice. could use better cleaning staff - had q-tip on carpet from prior quest. only there for 1 night - bellmen very friendly and acommating.

This hotel is not up to Starwood standard.
I knew it was being refurbished but one day it was a W and the next it wasn't.
A very tired and shabby place.
Reception staff were always very courteous.

Hotel has an excellent location: a few blocks from the French Quarter, across the street from the casino, and one block from Riverside and trolley.
The service is spectacular and the staff is very friendly and accommodating.
The bathrooms are a little crammed and old, but the room as a whole was clean and comfortable.

My room was very dirty, even after the cleaning staff came each day I would have to call and ask them to change sheets again. They didnt pick anything up and I felt uncomfortable and unclean in my room.

I am a lifetime gold member and stay almost exclusively at Starwood hotels so my expectations are pretty high going in. When I checked in I was told that I was being provided with a freshly renovated room. What I wasn't told was that the room was not yet completed. For the most part the room was clean and fresh. But there were some glaring problems. There was not a desk chair so during my stay I had to sit on the banquette in the room to use my laptop and to eat. That alone made my stay less than a good experience. I called the front desk and asked them if they could get me a chair. They told me that the new chairs had not arrived yet, but they would try to find something I could use. They did not respond after that and no chair was brought to the room. I also had to call and ask for a room service menu, and the room did not have a personal coffee service, which I tend to expect. I would like to say that I will return to the W on my next trip next month, but right now I am not certain I will give it another shot.

Unfortunately this property needs some serious improvements. The carpet in the room was so badly soiled that there was a visible color difference in the perimeter of the room and the usable area.
The front desk staff was very responsive and gets very high marks for customer service.
However the valet parking should be shut down! I called for my vehicle and was told 10-15 minutes. When I arrived to retrieve the vehicle 15 minutes later it had not arrived. 30 minutes later I had to take a taxi to my meeting that I was now late for. The next morning for check out I called shortly after 5am, there was no traffic on the streets. Again I was told 10-15 minutes. When I arrived to retrieve the vehicle 15 minutes later no vehicle. The attendant called and was told they had just located the vehicle. They bring my vehicle 10 minutes later. This delay could have caused me to miss my flight. While the first night's parking was credited I was still charged for the second night but the service didn't improve even though it was the least busy time of the day. Maybe they should offer shuttle service because valet service is a nightmare!

My hotel room was not clean upon my arrival. I had to call the front desk and ask for my bedding to be changed because the sheets were stained. The bathroom was not clean. For the price of $169 nightly I would have liked WiFi in my room and continental breakfast would be nice.

The W New Orleans has a great location, quiet but still closet to all of the attractions. The lobby of the property is very nice -- what you have come to expect with the W brand. However, the rooms are a disaster. The beds are old and in lousy shape (not very heavenly). The room is an odd shape with no room for a chair or sitting area. There were things missing from the room each day (glasses, coffee maker, towels -- it varied by day) Overall, it was hard to believe that I was staying in a W brand hotel.

I've been to New Orleans over five times and never stayed at the W until last week. What a hidden gem! The hotel staff is very polite and friendly. The customer service was the best. The food was delicious in Zoe. We ate there for breakfast. The hotel room was comfty and clean. The hotel security was awesome too made me feel real comfortable staying there. The acura experience was real nice too. I never expected it and we took well advantage of it! Most of all -- it was the customer service and atmosphere of the hotel that was the winner for me. I would highly recommend this hotel!

I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions. This last time was the worst. We were woken up on several occasions by hotel staff checking on a water problem across the hall after midnight. After the 3rd time opening the door and asking them to quiet down, the front desk called our room and offered us to move. We ended up having to move rooms at 1am. Nothing was comped and I was told I would receive only 8,000 start points for my inconvenience that I have not yet received. I was very disappointed!!!!

Great location, walking distance to everything.
FREE internet should be in all rooms, when a 12 hour a day party is in the lobby. Impossible to access the internet in the W living room.
