Rated 1 out of 5 by Bullet You will NOT get your SPG points from your stay here.
I stayed at the hotel for almost two months and got very few of the points that were offered to me. In searching around to see other people's experiences, I did not see too many people with the same story as I had. So it seems like it is simply the Manager of the hotel(Director of Rooms) that made it as difficult as it possibly could be. I could write a small novel describing what a difficut time I had in getting credit for my SPG points. I came from an earlier hotel and the experience was completely different regarding the points, so it must be the hotel. In the end, it is all about the people that you deal with and this hotel was a big mistake.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Chuck2852 Not exactly what they said it would be
I made our reservation directly through the hotel reservations person as I wanted to find out whether I could get into the room prior to the 3 p.m. check-in. At that time, I asked about the rate for valet parking (and was told $49/night) and whether the hotel had room service (and was told yes). Our room was ok - nothing special, a little rundown (although the mattress was wonderful), few channel options. The next morning, we found that there is NO room service - just a continental breakfast that had to be eaten in Ditka's. When we checked out, our bill read $54 for valet parking. When I mentioned this to the desk clerk, I was told that was just how it was. I suggested that they inform their reservation person of these things, and was told that I must have made a reservation through the national line (untrue). What could have been a wonderful stay was marred by bad attitude and bad information.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Susan41 This hotel needs to be remodeled!
The location was great, but the room was awful. I so badly wanted to peel away some paint because I was just sure mold was growing behind the walls. There was clear evidence of water damage that looked as though it had just been painted over. The room smelled musty. There was only one bedside table and it didn't even have an alarm clock on it. I never thought I would take the time to review a hotel, but this one warranted a public review. The bell staff was great, though. Also, the areas around the vents were black!

Rated 2 out of 5 by KCLtx Great location, front desk unresponsive
The hotel is in a great location, and it is a small boutique hotel. The room needed some updating (peeling wallpaper etc) but that is easily overlooked. The huge problem here is the lack of help from the front desk. We wanted to eat at a French restaurant - the response from the front desk was "we have great Italian restaurants." Another thing, I asked for directions on the L to get to Little Italy - the directions they provided did not even put me on the right line - fortunately I realized this once I got on the train and was able to ask a passenger for directions. If you know everything about Chicago, this hotel is a great value and a marvelous location. If you are going to need any assistance, you should stay elsewhere.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Megan Not up to SPG standards
I always stay in Starwood hotels because I know what to expect as far as cleanliness, furniture, and amenities. However, the Tremont does not live up to usual SPG standards. Furniture is a hodgepodge and is old, carpet needed vacuuming, bathroom was dirty, no room service, no hair conditioner, no tissues, no work out room. The only thing that redeemed my stay was the location and finding out that I could do carryout from Ditkas downstairs (although I had to figure this out on my own).

Rated 2 out of 5 by NYConsultant Cheap for a reason...needs major renovation
Let me start off with the good - the location is wonderful and the rates are very low. That's about it.
This hotel is in need of major renovation. Old carpeting, old furniture, old heater/AC (it hit -30 degrees outside one night I stayed and the heater didn't fully work), old decor, etc. And this stuff is not vintage old. Old as in it smells funny and looks dirty. Random crumbs and stains throughout the room and hallways as well.
Honestly, given the price maybe this is within expectations. But given my mostly favorable experience with the Starwood brand, it's kind of shocking that they would have such a rundown hotel in their portfolio.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RPen Great stay - great experience
Staff were fabulous - They checked me in early after a miserable redeye flight from Los Angeles and that allowed me to rest & refresh.
Room was clean, quiet, and comfy. Chicago was going through a horrific Jan. storm but my stay was warm and pleasant.
Hotel is in the heart of the best of Chicago and is located in an affluent, safe area.
Hotel is an incredible bargain - I will def. stay there again. I highly reccomend it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Branvaughnlaw Great Location - Older Hotel
Let me begin by saying I had stayed in the Tremont many years ago when visiting Chicago for business. It was an older hotel then and not a Starwood property. I did not know it was a Starwood property now until booking online.
The location is excellent. Just off the north end of Michigan Avenue with hundreds of bars, shops and restaurants within walking distance. Especially great during the Christmas season. And Ditka's restaurant right next door is a big draw. The hotel itself is old, but the rooms were very nice, very clean. The elevators need a major overhall. Anyone who has been in an older building in downtown Chicago knows about the cramped wooded elevators. Parking was $49 pe rnight for valet, expensive but comparable for the area. The Tremont needs some work but for the location it's a great option.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Annoyed Disappointment
This was the worst Starwoods hotel stay we have ever had. The room was microscopic with views of the cooling towers out both windows. The closet was in the bathroom. One of the bathroom lights was broken. The temperature control could not cool the room. With only one elevator, moving up and down stairs was slow. When we arrived, there was no one at valet parking so we had to wait for someone to arrive and take our car. Upon leaving, it took 20 minutes to retrieve our car from the valet. We missed Sunday breakfast because no one told us it ended at 9:30AM. Every time we needed something at the front desk, we had to interrupt the person there who was on the phone. It was awful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Austonian Great Budget Hotel in Downtown Chicago
You can’t go wrong with this hotel if you want to stay just off Michigan Ave in downtown Chicago. This is a simple, quaint, budget hotel. If you’re looking for a more full-service hotel, it would be best to select another SPG property in the area.
Two aspects of hotel I enjoy:
1) Price: You can’t beat the price (value) for the location. Rooms are small. Décor is dated. But it’s clean and acceptable for the price paid.
2) Location: You’re 1 block off of Michigan Ave and 3 blocks from the CTA Red Line (subway). Small tree-lined street that is quiet and easy to find.
One area for improvement:
1) Toilets: toilets in the standard rooms are very low to the ground and are very antiquated. Hardware needs to be refreshed—otherwise the toilet runs constantly. I would have to lift the back of the toilet off to “fix” the issue each time I flushed. Ref Rm 1408.
Also, a note for SPG elites, I’ve had excellent luck with room upgrades at this hotel. Suites are enormous with separate living room, entryway.

Rated 3 out of 5 by geconkl GREAT location...cool building...but old and dirty...
The hotel lobby is very nice - floor to ceiling dark woods, nice atmosphere, warm fireplace for Chicago winters, and Ditka's restaurant is attached to the hotel for convenience.
There is only 1 elevator which serves all 15 or so floors of the hotel and it is so slow. There were many times that it would come to our floor and be completely full. It wasnt uncommon to wait multiple minutes for the elevator.
The hotel also has no vending machines what so ever and I was told by the front desk, no ice machines either.
The rooms are decorated tastefully, but the decor in general is old and furniture was bruised and broken all over the place. Tiles were broken in the bathroom and the baseboards all over the room were also busted up and broken. The worst of all was the tub drained very very slowly which meant standing water in the tub while showering. The first day we ran the shower to check it and the hair and grossness that came up from the drain was disgusting. I asked the front deskk to fix the problem, but it never got any better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by WineAdvisoryGroup Understand What You're Getting... It's OK Now and Will Be Better Down the Road
The rating is easy... Everyone knows the physical plant "Needs Improvement". As long as you know what you're getting you'll be fine. Currently, this is a residential style hotel that needs a refurb. I understand they will be getting new carpeting and such next month. But the rates reflect the current status of the hotel.... and the location is superb. I didn't experience any flaws (odors, etc.) and the front desk was friendly and willing to help in any way. Ditka's, off the lobby, was excellent. It is what it is... understand that... enjoy the excellent rates and be happy. If you're looking for services or luxury, go elsewhere.

Right off Michigan Avenue, the Tremont offers guests the ability to enjoy the Gold Coast without the use of taxis. Dinner at Ditka's was fabulous and believe it or not, can be quite economical when sharing meals.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Robinski Needs Updating and Better Security
The entire hotel looks old, musty, dull, dark, needs repainting, new carpeting, new pain, updating. Not 21st century. Doesn't feel secure. Speaking of secure, here's how my check-in went. The first time, my keys didn't work. I schlepped back downstairs with my luggage and asked for new keys. Schlepped bags back upstairs to the room, opened the room, only to find the room was already assigned to someone else. Good thing that person wasn't in his room at the time. How scary! The front desk staff only seemed mildly concerned that they gave me access to someone else's room. Once I got to my room, which was just down the hall, I found that the tile, fixtures, carpeting, furniture, everything...was dated, dark, not inviting. At least the room seemed to be clean -- including the towels and sheets.

Rated 2 out of 5 by caz1234 Location Only
I phoned in advance and left a msge to inquire about referrals for possible New Year’s Eve activities, no-one even bothered to reply. Followed up with another call and the woman was most unhelpful.
At check-in we were upgraded to a king size room and staff were polite and friendly, but service depends very much on who is on the desk.
Elevator was out of service -shared the old service elevator in back with the cleaners the entire trip.
We had a problem with the room safe and response by mtce staff was immediate.
There were two people in the room but the hotel only provided one bottle of water - why bother at all?
We requested a wake-up call on last day which never happened. We mentioned it to the person on the desk and he asked us ",,, if we could have missed it"???
In general the hotel looks "tired" and the staff not especially motivated. Location is central and close to shopping and restaurants - but we wouldn't stay there again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Cyberdude Worst hotel of the year award
I must stay at least 25 hotels a year and this was the worst one I stayed at all year. It is worn out and is in need of a renovation. This cannot not be a surprise to management.
On top of everything it smells of sewage. The staff are great, considering what they must put up with. Parking is a disaster as you have to wait 30 to 40 minutes to get your car.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Olson25 Great location
We had a great experience at this hotel. However, the elevators were a pain and took forever to use. When we were finally able to get into the elevator they were filled with carpet that was torn out from other rooms. At one point one of the workers left the elevator and my boyfriend had to hold his roll of carpet for him as we continued down to the first floor. Also room 807 the shower did not drain so the water was filled to the top of the bath tub. Our curtains also had mold on the top. Other than the items mentioned above we loved the hotel.

My daughter and I stayed at the Tremont for a quick visit to Chicago. The location could not have been better, the staff could not have been more helpful, and the bed was amazing! Literally, we did not want to get out of it.
The room was quite small and sparse, but the bed made up for it. The price was so reasonable. We were out and about for most of the time, so the room size was not really an issue.

This is a great location, hotel is old, wallpaper coming off wall, cobb webs in room, sheets did not fit bed, towels old and worn. I would not recommentd unless you only care about location. Dont walk up the steps, they are old and dirty. Sorry, but I would rate this as the worst Starwood property I have ever experienced.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BirthdayBoy Birthday Boy
The Tremont is an older SPG property; complete with its charms and areas of improvement. I emailed the hotel 2 weeks prior to my birthday weekend.
My wife and I were greeted at the front desk and informed that we had a bottle of white wine to celebrate my birthday. We had a 2 room suite: one room had a nice comfortable queen bed with circular fan and new TV. The other room was a nice sitting room with new TV and small refrigerator.
Later that night, I noticed the TV in the sitting room did not work. The next day the TV was replaced within half an hour.
Overall the Tremont is a fine hotel, but has areas of improvement:
1. new carpeting
2. paint the rooms and hallways
3.refinish the hardwood floors
4. Refinish or replace some of the older furniture,
5. Replace some of the mirror inserts on the clothes closet doors, and
6. Spruce up the front desk area.
The managers and front desk personnel are very responsive and seem to care.
Hotel has a great location and could be made into a fantastic hotel. Starwood needs to spend more $$ on its renovation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Love2travel60 Terrific Location, Comfy Boutique Hotel
There are 3 standout things about the Tremont Chicago.
1.)The location cannot be beat if you are wanting to walk or hop on the bus to get to all the wonderful things to see, eat, and do in Chicago. 1/2 block from Michigan Ave., Water Tower Place/Hancock Bldg., Busses, Rush St., and a short walk to Oak St. Beach.
2.)It has historic 1800's Chicago boutique hotel ambiance. If you know this when you book the hotel and you enjoy this sort of atmosphere, then the antique feel with a few bumps and dents doesn't bother you. Another guest and I were commenting on the charm of the hotel and he remarked that it had an "Elliot Ness and the Untouchables aura about the place". The elevators were being renovated during my stay but it was not a problem. The other renovations that have been completed have been well done and have maintained the character of the building. 3.) Value. Couldn't believe the price for the location. Also, my bed was very comfortable, the room was clean, the heat worked great on a -2 deg. day, and the staff was friendly and helpful.
Two constructive criticisms: the in-room safe was broken and the continental breakfast was a little sparse, (only hot item offered was instant oatmeal packets). I will return to and recommend this hotel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by WineAdvisoryGroup Great As Residential Hotel
This place is not your traditional hotel. It's a small hotel without much of any services. But the location is fantastic. As a Platinum member I was lucky enough to get a nice suite upgrade. The room was excellent... maybe not very modern, and a few nicks and dents, but nicely appointed and excellent space. The bed was new and comfy. Ditka's attached is a nice plus. It's like an apartment (residence)... if that's ok, then its a great Starwood property considering the location and fabulous rates. The rates are obviously low since they realize it needs major upgrading.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Frustration Old and Tired -- The Hotel
We stay there twice in the last two years during the early Christmas season. We chose The Tremont principally for the proximity to Michigan Avenue and the good price. The hotel is old and needs a general spruce-up, especially on the so-called Starwood Preferred Floor. We had issues with the TV reception, internet/wireless service was spotty, the in-room safe was locked and could not be opened and it took four stops at the front desk to have someone come up and fix the connection on the telephone. These were all minor annoyances, but annoyances none the same. We may choose the Tremont again for our own reasons but have difficulty recommending it to anyone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by TEAMMC Starwood Platinum Guest Disappointed
I walked into the hotel thinking this was going to be beautiful by the enterance, I was very displeased as I walked past the restaurant and lobby toward the front desk. This hotel for being a Starwood gets kudos for its location other than that everything on the inside doesn't apply to Starwood Hotel Standards and if they do its very minimal. Very old hotel, expect a longer than normal wait on valet parking and lower your Starwood Standards if you want to stay here. Needless to say for the cost of the hotel I was very disappointed.

Older boutique hotel, great location just off Michigan Ave. by the Water Tower. Starbucks right across the street and they offer a continental breakfast at Ditka's right next door for $10. And Ditka's is right next door!! I was in town for the birth of my granddaughter and I could walk to Prentice Women's Hospital easily. It is an older building, but I love those and so charming. Beds and sheets were top quality-sooo comfy. Elevator was a bit unpredictable, but staff got on fixing it right away. I would stay again.
