Historically known as Mudken and dating back more than 2,000 years, Shenyang is the largest city in northeastern China and is the capital of Liaoning Province. Le Méridien Shenyang, Heping is located in Taiyuan Street, the traditional downtown of Shenyang. Wonderful shopping, dining, and entertainment options are steps away at Wanda Plaza and Taiyuan Shopping Street. Both the Metro and Shenyang Train Station are within easy walking distance from the hotel, and Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (SHE) is 28 kilometres away.
At the Shenyang Imperial Palace, 114 formidable buildings have been structured to resemble the Forbidden City. Initially constructed in 1625, the culturally-enriching complex is just 10 minutes away by car. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as are the Qing Dynasty’s imperial tombs Fuling and Zhaoling. Featuring more than 1,700 plants, the peaceful Shenyang Botanical Garden hosts numerous flower shows each year. Mount Qipanshan Scenic Spot is also lovely and tranquil.
Astronomy aficionados can see the world’s oldest known meteorite—weighing about two million tons—at the Meteorite Mountain Park. Containing tens of thousands of artefacts, including some of the earliest forms of writing known to man, the Liaoning Provincial Museum is northeast China’s largest. The Shenyang Steam Locomotive Museum, which houses 16 steam engines, is another unique experience worth discovering.
For a cultivated dose of ancient art, attend one of Shenyang’s popular Er ren zhuan or Yangge folk dance performances. The Dawutai Theatre is particularly famous for its Er ren zhuan and Chinese skit performances. Also engaging are performances by the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe, the Liaoning Ballet, and the Liaoning Song and Dance Ensemble. Football fans will be impressed by Shenyang’s famed traditions. And gourmets can savour indigenous Liaocai cuisine and sample some tantalising Korean and Mongolian fare.
