Meaning “the fort of Chandi,” Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab and Haryana and is the country’s best-planned city. Wander around to see the innovative sculptures at Rock Garden. All of the pieces were made with industrial and urban waste, including frames, mudguards, forks, handlebars, metal wires, play marbles, porcelain, auto parts, and broken bangles. Chandigarh’s official emblem, Open Hand, is equally dynamic. Signifying peace and unity—“open to give and open to receive”—the 14-metre-high hand is made from metal sheets and rotates like a weathervane. Learn about Chandigarh’s history at the Le Corbusier Centre, the famous Swiss-French architect who designed the city. The three main government buildings—Secretariat, Legislative Assembly, and High Court—at Capital Complex are also worth seeing.

Paddle around on a pedal boat to enjoy the picturesque views at Sukhna Lake. Home to over 1,600 species of roses, the Rose Garden is the largest of its kind in Asia. See more than 300 dolls from all over the world at the International Doll Museum. Admire the wonderful collection of miniature paintings from the Gandhara and Pahari schools of art at the Government Museum and Art Gallery.

Take an excursion to the well-known hill station Shimla. Often referred to as the “Queen of Hills,” it is particularly famous for its colonial architecture. Kasauli is another quaint and popular hill station worth visiting. Offering spectacular hillside views, a highlight of this 19th-century colonial town is its highest point, Monkey Point. Explore the timber train or the beautiful Pinjore gardens. After a busy day of activities, recharge with some delicious Punjabi cuisine.
