Rated 5 out of 5 by Wonderful City Experience This is one of my favorite city hotels in North America. The way they have renovated it from an old jail is amazing. The rooms are spacious and well designed. Hotel amenities are top notch. Experienced only one small issue during our stay. When we were ready to leave, I called for the bellman and valet, waited 20-30 minutes, but no one arrived. I called again and the bellman did arrive promptly. However, when we arrived at the front, our car was not ready. It took another 10-15 minutes for them to retrieve our car. Obviously, the person who took the first call didn't do their job. I've stayed there previously and had no issues, so I think this was an isolated incident. I would still stay there the next time I am in Boston. August 10, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ultimate Luxury Beantown Property! It's taken a week or so, before I could express into words the emotional impact of my experience at The Liberty Hotel last Friday. The backstory starts about almost 3 years ago. I had checked into the W Hotel in Hollywood, California and was greeted by a young man and I believe it was actually his first day on the job his name is Dakota. he was the Bellman that help bring bags up to my room. Originally been from Boston, I immediately detected his accent. A simple bring in my bag up to the room extended into about a 45 minute talk about Beantown and Massachusetts and how his travels had lead him to California. There was something about that young man, that made a big impression on me. Looking back now I realize I was able to see it myself and him when I was his age in my early 20s. His authenticity is real mess and even a little bit of that Boston attitude immediately made me feel connected to him. I took it upon myself over the last several years to keep in touch with him and follow his career through Starwood corporate. As revolve had our challenges in life growing up Dakota certainly had his own, but nothing hinder him from meager beginning is a bellman to becoming a manager at the front desk of a luxury property in Boston. Upon arriving at the property my guest and I were greeted with such a warm welcoming extended beyond the customary "welcome." Akeem and Morris literally embraced us with hugs and made us feel as if we were coming home after a long time on the road rather than checking into a hotel property. Akeem and Morris brought such a smile to my face after a 41/2 hour delay on JetBlue. I thought maybe these are some old friends that know me that I forgot it was like almost confusing they were so kind!! Even walking into the Lobby, every team member greeted me by name, came over to shake my hand, it was like a procession of a welcome committee. Upon checking in Stephanie, came around the Front Desk to give me a hug and give me details about this beautiful property. Such an interesting history, as it was once in jail house back in the 1800s and actually still have some of the original cells in tact with the bars in brick. Even the little lounge is called "The Clink" I have never had this type of treatment before, and I've been a Starwood platinum member for 15 years in a row as well as became a lifetime platinum status about four years ago. I'm also a platinum preferred planner and do everything that I can to promote the brand. There's something very special about Stephanie. The ability to be professional and personal at the same time. She shared with me some upcoming surgery that will be taking place and we literally in that moment clasped hands and had a healing prayer together. Definitely not your typical checking LOL. Beyond that, when I heard her mother was coming into town for her procedure I contacted the manager of my father's restaurant in the north end and make sure that they'll have a complimentary dinner the night before her surgery. Just a little way to pay back the warmth and love that I felt. Steve, the Bellman, brought us up to the suite and once again gave us a great mini tour of the property and some of the history. From the property standpoint, the place is immaculately clean and very luxurious. Every team member has a smile and helpful attitude. In addition the room that I had was a beautiful corner suite overlooking the Boston skyline. Truly the best view of the city of any hotel property has ever stayed at. The amenities in the bathroom will be on luxurious, even better than the bliss products that the W features. The bed was extremely comfortable and it was very hard to get out of it the next morning. We had room service and the food was incredible. I had their homemade macaroni and cheese, my friend had a huge big beef burger, and I had the most amazing chicken Caesar salad ever had in my life it was incredible real roasted chicken not the slices you get out of a plastic bag. It was just one of those days where I felt more comfortable then probably coming to my own house! Everyone was so helpful so loving and so kind. Below I have copied and pasted the text message that I sent to my whole family after I checked in. "Just checked into the liberty Hotel in Boston. I don't think I've ever had an experience with any Starwood property like the one Dakota set up for me today. When we arrived and I stepped out of the Uber everybody came running over to hug us ..like all the Bellman , valet people and called me by name.. When I got into the lobby the manager behind the desk, Stephanie gave us duck a warm welcome! Beyond!!! I really can't express in words how powerful this experiences for me. And the view of Boston is incredible! Earlier today when I was at the airport and we had a four hour delay I noticed this old Haitian woman in a wheelchair that everybody was ignoring. I went over to her and had somebody translate because she only spoke French if she needed anything and they said yes she would like apple juice so I got an apple juice and a banana. It reminded me that when we serve other people and we lift other people and help relieve suffering existence smiles upon us. I am truly humbled and truly grateful and to think that two years ago when Dakota was only a bellman that through our relationship and working with him he was able to lift himself to a position of manager at a luxury property in Boston and could provide this type of experience for me as a way to show his gratitude is incredible and more so because all the employees here love and respect him so much that it was a pleasure for them to honor his request to give me such great treatment." I will never forget this experience and the beautiful people that are part of the team at the Liberty Hotel. Rated 5 out of 5 by Great hotel Hotel in a great location, easy walking to historic areas, subway right across the street for travel to further locations. Hotel very historic but very cool, nice set up. Staff friendly, didn't follow up on a couple of request but no big deal. Bar, restaurants and night life all great but not a noise problem for sleeping. Overall hotel really is a good one, will be back August 4, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great location, slightly less than luxurious stay We were excited to enjoy the Liberty for a special weekend in Boston. Overall it was a good experience, the service was great, but rooms, attention to detail and expected luxury fell short of the value expected. Were told we were upgraded to a courtyard view (always nice, but not expected), but it was on a lower floor, so we didn't have any views of the River, which would have been preferred. We liked the liveliness of the hotel and was not at all, in our opinion, too loud or club like. Would prefer to have a hotel with a Spa and pool, that is part of the luxury collection, so know that both of these are missing here. This experience fell short of the value and luxury expected. With that said, would still recommend the hotel, as long as value for your expenditure is not your first priority. Pro's- Hotel aesthetics - the repurposing of the hotel from a jail, retaining and redoing some of the very interesting architecture. The Lobby area is fantastic and an incredible first impression. Great place to grab a drink, as well as the outdoor bar area....awesome! Location - next to the Charles River, in close walking distance to Boston Common & Public Park, Newbury street for shopping, North End for good Italian food, sports venues, Fenway Park and TD Garden and Charles street, a fantastic local street with shops and great dining options. Service - despite the lack of SPG recognition, the service outside of that was spectacular. They were attentive and responsive to everything we wanted and needed. Con's- Room comfort - the rooms are tired and worn out. The furniture is nicked and scratched, the carpet is old/stained and the bathrooms need updating. Happy to read they are doing a room refresh starting in November and to be completed in early 2016. Attention to detail - checked in to stains on the bed sheets. Quickly remedied, but how does this get missed while making up a room? Towels - the towels are far from luxurious, however, do provide a good exfoliation due to their rough texture. Value - you simply don't get the value for the expenditure. Wifi - very slow and unreliable August 1, 2015

The staff was very friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond for all of our requests. All of our guests were raving about the gorgeous building and the delicious food. They replenished our room and car with water every day and provided the best service as I am a spg member. Fruit baskets and complimentary 2 drinks at the bar. One negative thing that just didnt make sense is charging customers for ice weather you order a drink that needs ice or just ice in a cup at the lobby bar yet ice bars in the room halls are free. Rated 5 out of 5 by Wonderful Experience! I absolutely enjoy and love staying at the Liberty Hotel! My room was gorgeous-with a very comfortable king-size bed and a beautiful view of the Charles (and of Boston). I had drinks in the Liberty's upstairs lobby and dinner at Scampo-delicious! I worked out in the hotel gym in the morning-fairly new equipment, well-kept and maintained, free weights, etc.-fresh, clean towels were plentiful, cold water was available, and red delicious apples (nice touch). My "neighbor" woke me up in the middle of the night with a party going on in his/her room. When I called downstairs to the front desk, within (less than) five minutes someone came and took care of the issue-my neighbor's company left, and it was quiet the rest of the night. I was very impressed! Thank you to the Liberty Hotel for a wonderful night away, delicious dinner, and comfortable accomodations! June 8, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Interesting Hotel This place have a very interesting design. When you go up the escalators, it opens up to the central lobby and have a great view. Upon lining up to check in, they provided Champaign and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately they did not have a room with a double bed as requested due to flooding issues. They provided us with a king size bed which was a bit awkward and annoying. The room was a comfortable size.. The bathroom was nice but the water from the shower leaks onto the bathroom floor due to the shower door not closing properly. The Clink restaurant downstairs was nicely designed but service was slow during breakfast. It took 15 min for someone to come take our order. Overall, good, but can use some minor improvements. Rated 2 out of 5 by Party hotel, not a luxury hotel by any means. We arrived at the hotel, it was very pleasant. After check in we were shown our room, we booked a corner deluxe room. The room was tired and felt dirty, there were stains on the chair, the carpets were frayed as were the cheap towels in the bathrooms and broken toilet seat. Also the room smelt like smoke and the product that hotels use to cover it up. We were too tired after a 7 hour flight to complain. We had booked a late dinner in town and returned back at 1am, there was a party outside that went on until past 2am (we were in a room in the old jail above the outdoor bar). Like I mentioned in the title it was a party hotel. We woke up feeling nauseous because of the smell in the room and went down to speak to the duty manager. I spoke with Jill, who really tried her best and showed us two alternative rooms in the new block, which we switched to and were satisfied with but it is still not a 4 or 5 star more like a good 3 in standard. Jill explained that the hotel is due a refurbishment this year so maybe that will bring the hotel up to a higher standard. She also credited my account with starwood points which I felt was very good on the hotels part. The shining star of our stay was the outstanding concierge Daymeyn who had a great attitude and was very helpful throughout our stay. Again a very fun party hotel which to be honest was what we were looking for during our stay, it is just not a luxury or 5 star hotel. There is no spa or pool so in my opinion can not be 5* anyway. Rated 5 out of 5 by Liberty Hotel, especially lovely in the Spring We stayed in this beautiful hotel for two nights, and thoroughly enjoyed the quiet, beautiful room, and especially loved the views of the old jail building and the river. Years ago we lived nearby and enjoyed seeing how the jail has been renewed! Breakfast in Clink Restaurant was great and we loved seeing the window bars as decoration. June 1, 2015

However what made it for me was the amazing staff from the get go of the bell hops all the way through to the house keeping. Reception staff were amazing, thank you Bar staff... Now you guys know how to make me feel welcome, putting up with me moving around the lobby so I could power, amazingly!!! Stay here you won't be disappointed May 3, 2015

From the doorman, the front desk and especially Damien the Concierge, I was treated with exceptional service. All were extremely helpful and made my visit pleasureable. Dining here was superb along with the service. My room was exquisite as well as the view. I highly recommend this hotel. April 28, 2015

Rated 1 out of 5 by Very, VERY Disappointed I was really looking forward to staying here, but the stay was such a disaster I have no plans on ever staying here again. I am very happy for those who had a great experience; it just was not mine. I stayed this past weekend because I was running the Boston Marathon. I made the hotel aware of this in my reservation notes, in follow-up calls and when I checked in. The staff was not accommodating and could even be considered rude, making my attempts for an easeful, restful stay so difficult. The bathroom doors didn't close all the way, there was a hole in the bathroom wall that was poorly patched up, the two rooms they put me in both faced the noisy ambulance entrance to the next door hospital. My first room was on the first floor right outside the lobby (after a lot of coordination on my part, I was able to move to a higher floor my second night) AND the beds shared the wall with the treadmills in the next door exercise room. The second room was directly outside the elevator bank. And the staff were completely unhelpful and unapologetic about the situation. As a Gold SPG member, I was definitely expecting more. Rated 5 out of 5 by Very interesting hotel! Loved the hotel. Last year I passed the hotel on a duck tour and knew I wanted to come back and stay. Due to a flight cancellation we were able to do just that. Check-in was nice and easy and even included a glass of sparkling wine. Concierge was super helpful with a FedEx package. Food and drink very expensive, but that is all of Boston. April 22, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Might be the worst property in the Starwood luxury family I recently hosted a business event at the Liberty. To be charitable, it might of been the worst experience of my travel career. It's very rare that you can experience a complete lack of interest in the customer. It reminds me of 2007 when hotels were booming. Our stay was filled with a series of mistakes and at each step we encountered a complete lack of interest in providing adequate services for the rates we were paying. I would never recommend the property to any consumer. It's an awful place. April 16, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fun/Unique/Interesting Hotel & Best Night In "Jail"!!! The Liberty is a great hotel with unique Boston jail history. During a college tour near Boston with our son, my wife and I (and son) enjoyed our stay. First, let's address the noise factor mentioned in many prior reviews. We actually enjoyed the "lively" lobby area that certainly had a nightclub atmosphere on the Friday night of our stay. We had a drink after dinner and enjoyed the activity and multi-level architecture of the Liberty's lobby. We had rooms in the Tower section of the hotel and I would recommend staying in this section of the hotel since it was very quiet while the lobby activity continued after we left. Our room was great with a nice view of the Charles River and we also enjoyed "The Clink" restaurant at the hotel for dinner. Our room service breakfast was also well done. Guests have also complained about the roughly $50/night charge for parking. Boston parking is notoriously expensive, even for most large U.S. cities. Honestly, if we did not have some day trips that extended beyond the Boston city limits, I would recommend using the subway or Uber/taxis rather than navigating the difficult street system and parking opportunities in this city. Finally, the staff at The Liberty was great from check in, wait staff, and the valet/bellman at the front door. We have stayed in over 50+ Starwood hotels throughout the U.S. and Europe and we will definitely stay here again when we visit Boston in the future. April 5, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by LOUD!!! Was offered a room in the historic jail portion of the hotel at check-in. Was told it was in the "lively" part of the hotel. This did not accurately reflect the fact that it sounded as if the bar crowd was right outside my door until 2 AM. The only positive was that the heat was so loud it drowned out the noise when it was on. Room was also quite small for the price. Also, i understand mini-bar items are costly, but the prices here bordered on absurd. March 26, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Unique Hotel in Boston, Avoid Thursday-Sunday An excellent luxury hotel in Boston with a very unique architecture. I believe that it used to be a prison, and was converted, which is why you do not see many windows. That is actually what makes this place great - it's not like other traditional hotels. I would caution those who are coming with a family if you're staying here thursday-saturday. It turns into a "night club" where a lot of upscale college kids (during the school season) hang out, get drunk, and attempt to find love. The whole lobby turns into one big ol' party, which is amazing if you're into the scene. If you're not, then this may not be your cup of tea as it can get quite loud. Regardless, I would definitely stay here given my love for a lively place. February 26, 2015

The welcoming staff at the front door and the front desk made check-in a pleasure. Our room was filled with amenities and was uniquely designed, clean & comfortable. The hotel restaurant Clink was as fabulous - service was impeccable, the food beyond delicious. A special thanks to Dakota, Jill, Erin, Adam and Carlos for making our stay extra special. Rated 2 out of 5 by How this place is considered luxury is mind blowing Great location but WTF about the underwear show by the D list models in the lobby all night. Forget having a drink or snack. There are dirty spotlights swirling around, horribly bad extremely loud music and droves of old men in bad suits standing around dying to get laid. This place is so confusing. I purposely reserve luxury properties but how this place made the roster is beyond me. Fire the GM and get someone with taste. This is Boston, not Daytona. I honestly want a refund and a tetanus shot. Never again. February 12, 2015

Rated 5 out of 5 by Best stay in Jail ever! Our family needed a place to use as home base while waiting at Mass General Hospital. The Liberty is basically connected and easy walking distance to all MGH facilities. From the moment we arrived and the Valet asked how we would like our parking handled (short term hold-overnight, etc) to the wonderful front dest staff that offered us some chilled Proseco while we registered. The whole team was just really pleasant and seemed to like being at the Liberty. We loved the authentic historical theme, the lobby is probably one of the best in terms of decor and amenities anywhere. Here is what sets the Liberty apart from anywhere else. I had booked several nights due to uncertainties and when we ended up being able to check out a bit earlier than expected but 12 hours after the cancellation period, I called the hotel to explain and they offered to allow cancellation and even made sure that our breakfast was complimentary. Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Hotel Hotel lobby basically becomes a nightclub at night which is great if your looking to have fun but not go anywhere. Its loud but the guest rooms are in a separate building, so no noise. The corner rooms are next to a ramp so there is some mild road noise, I was on the 5th floor and asked them to move me, which they did quickly. Restaurant food was good. Valet guys out front were solid. Bed was comfortable. Shower products high quality. The only negative during my stay were the sandpaper bath towels. Try using some fabric softener for me just once. Rated 4 out of 5 by Breathtaking hotel. The pictures of the Liberty online do not do this Beauty any justice. Immediatley upon looking at the front of the hotel, in a perfect location beside the Charles River, entices you to wonder what the inside will look like. They did an amazing job at keeping a lot of the original character of the first suffolk county jail. The lounge and restaurant bring in a lot of locaIs and I was suprprised at how busy both were on the Friday night I was there. I would highly recommend this hotel to the younger demographic looking for a lively night life. The train station is literally a 15 second walk from the front entrance.I also noticed a lot of guests had their fur babies so it was nice to see such a luxury hotel observing that many people like to travel with their furry companions My only dissapointment was that there was no hot tub or pool, but I guess jails were not built with those amenities.
