Take the complimentary water ferry to explore Oglethorpe’s city via River Street, or climb the bluff (by stair, car or elevator) to see the main city plan, still faithful to the original one of ordered squares and public spaces.
The landmark Historic District is the largest in the country, and it is shaded by one of the country’s most impressive urban forests. Scattered throughout the downtown area, visitors will find a variety of shops from which to choose. Well represented are a variety of boutiques with high-end clothing, custom jewelry, and unique accessories—and, of course, souvenir shops.
Savannah is a city with particular rewards for the walker, but visitors can choose other means if they prefer. Boat tours explore the riverfront, including the more industrial sections upriver and historic Fort Jackson, which once guarded the entrance to the port. There are bus and “trolley” tours, as well as more unique options such as horse-drawn carriages and hearse tours. Most evenings, you can even count on catching a pedi-cab, a cross between a rickshaw and a bicycle which still depends on the power of the driver’s legs.
