Learn More About Athens - Vouliagmeni
Located on the private Astir Palace Resort peninsula in Vouliagmeni, the Arion Resort & Spa is nestled in the heart of the Athenian Riviera, surrounded by the crystal-clear blue waters of the Saronic Gulf, which is lined with sandy beaches and palm trees. A natural seaside oasis at the foot of the Hymettus mountain range, it is just a half-hour drive or 25 km from the cosmopolitan city centre of Athens and 24 km from the airport.
This central location makes the resort an ideal base from which to visit the area’s many attractions. Guests interested in Athens’ rich culture can explore numerous landmarks and archeological sites while contemporary-minded guests head to nearby Glyfada’s prestigious shopping district, where high-end boutiques meet outdoor cafés. Known as the Hellenic Hamptons, it is just ten minutes from the resort and—along with Vouliagmeni and Varkiza—offers some of the area’s most beautiful beaches.
Our concierge recommends the following sites as top regional stops:
The Acropolis: Also known as the “Sacred Rock” of Athens, it is the city’s most important historical site and dates back to the Middle Neolithic Era. While in the area, don’t miss the Theater of Dionysus—the oldest theater in the world—situated at the base of the Acropolis.
Another notable monument is the Temple of Poseidon. Built in the 5th century B.C., it is located in the Cape Sounion area and honors Poseidon, the god of the sea.
Absorb all of Athens from Lycabetus Hill and don’t miss Syntagma, Constitution Square, or Piraeus Port, which has been the port of Athens for more than 2,500 years.
Take a break in the National Garden. Designed in 1938 by Amalia, the first Queen of Greece, the park includes a duck pond, small zoo, Botanical Museum, and more. Meanwhile, the Megaron, or Athens Concert Hall, offers the perfect conclusion to an inspiring day.
Just minutes from the resort, Vouliagmeni Lake is one of the most impressive natural wonders in the area. Maintaining a year-round temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, the water is mineral rich and believed to have healing properties.
