Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa
Cliff Diving Ceremony
The unforgettable cliff diving ceremony, held nightly at sunset, has been a tradition at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa since the resort opened in 1963—but the meaning comes from a legend dating back to the 1700s and King Kahekili of Maui, who proved his spiritual bravery by diving from Black Rock into the Pacific.
The ritual begins about five to ten minutes before sunset—approximately 6:15pm—when the cliff diver runs across resort grounds to chants of old Hawaii, lighting torches for evening and pausing for photos. He then climbs Black Rock—viewable from our Cliff Dive Bar—and lights a final set of torches before taking his dramatic head-long leap into the ocean below.
