The Blue Palace Resort & Spa opened in June 2003, after 20 years of planning to ensure its seamless integration into this untouched area of remarkable beaches, unsurpassed cerulean waters, and arid mountains.
Tucked away from the busy Gulf of Elounda, the island’s crystal clear waters and white shore take main stage. Directly across from the resort is Spinalonga Island where, in 1579, the Venetians built a fortress on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. It was also home to the world’s last active leper colony, as detailed in Victoria Hislop’s celebrated novel “The Island”.
Meanwhile, the resort’s architecture is an impressive and modern mix of the eastern and western cultures that have shaped Crete, including Arab, Ottoman, and Venetian. A particularly stunning example is our 11-meter-high Venetian Arsenali, or shipyard, that has been authentically reconstructed in the hotel lobby. Based on nearby Heraklion Harbor, it is exemplary of the resort’s commitment to involve guests in the region’s history.
Our most recent effort is the 2007 south wing addition of 48 new guest rooms, a pool, restaurant, and conference facilities, which assert our classification as Crete’s finest vacation destination.
