Rated 3 out of 5 Location is everything but hotel has a long way to go The room in the Tower was nice but the food odors wafting up from the restaurants are nasty. The check-in experience was miserable - kind of like a bus station (they never sent the champagne they said they would send for our anniversary), the elevators are slow and dirty, the tour we booked through the concierge to visit Pearl Harbor was miserable, the food in the restaurants (breakfast and dinner) is awful and over-priced, but the beach experience is great. Rated 4 out of 5 by Perfect Location Loved my stay at the Royal Hawaiian. Stayed in the historic wing with an ocean view of Waikiki Beach. Room was comfortable and housekeeping staff are fantastic. Great being able to use the pool at the Sheraton Waikiki. Only issue is the bather's elevator which has carpet and can get a little smelly when wet. July 22, 2014

Rated 3 out of 5 by Just not what we were looking for I guess it boils down to this: everyone was efficient and professionally friendly, but no one was, well, welcoming. It just didn't feel like the ohana we have come to expect in Hawaii. We had a problem getting our beach chairs reserved, and the concierge did take care of that, but she kept promising to call us and give us a status, but we always had to call her. She did get it taken care of, but it should not have happened in the first place. Also, on our last day there, the breakfast service was terrible. The waiter kept saying how "everyone came to breakfast at the same time". We had to ask more than once for a refill on our one cup of coffee; and it took almost 30 minutes for the smoothies, even after we reminded him. I don't know; I guess being as it was the Pink Princess, we expected more. July 14, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Hotel - Comfort, Style, and Service Royal Hawaiian is an excellent hotel with elegance and charm. My family and I stayed in a Suite with a garden view. We were impressed by the high ceilings, crown moldings, updated bathroom, and other details that made the room luxurious. Our only observation was, for a room that size, 2 double beds in the main bedroom just seems odd. There is certainly enough space to replace all Double beds with Queen beds so that spouses could sleep in the same bed while on vacation. Otherwise, the room was plush with all the desired amenities and the service staff was gracious, welcoming, and responsive to our needs. Thank you for a wonderful visit to Oahu! July 14, 2014

Rated 1 out of 5 by Beautiful Hotel, Horrible Service, and Bad SPG/Hotel allignment ---Summary--- Though the managers were polite and empathetic in all dealings with me, they frequently were insulting in the content of their gestures, and unable to take action to correct both mis-understandings as well as gross negligence. The hotel's reservation system is apparently completely mis-aligned with the SPG website and availability shown cannot be trusted, and the valet gave my car to someone else without checking ID. I recommend skipping the property all together--a good Sheraton or Westin would easily be better, and a lesser hotel would provide a better guest experience than the Royal Hawaiian, "a Luxury Collection hotel." ---Some Detail--- It's a rarity for me to take my family on a business trip, but my kids were out of school this past week and I had meetings in Hawaii. My family dropped me off at my business meeting and continued to the Royal Hawaiian to check-in. I set this up with the SPG support line, and was ensured this would be alright by putting my wife's name on the reservation, providing my SPG number, and sending her with my first-born child. Upon arrival, my wife was told she could not complete check-in, or discuss Platinum Room upgrades without the SPG Platinum member present. While my family waited, I was forced to take 20 mins out of my business meetings to call the hotel and talk about room upgrades. I checked online if there were any Junior suites available while on hold for the first 5 minutes of the call--and there were. I was put in contact with the Manager right away, who told me that there weren't any upgrades or jr. suites available. We discussed the disconnect between what I could book online (, and she said the website was frequently wrong. After about 10 mins of being told there weren't any suites but SPG suite-night Awards are always honored (mine were declined), she told me that their solution was to offer me their nicest suite for a LARGE amount in addition to my reservation... We had planned for a fun day traveling around Oahu on the 4th of July-- When I didn't see our car at the valet, they apologized for giving another guest my car 10 minutes earlier. THATS RIGHT, they gave my rental car including my kids CAR SEATS to another person without checking ID or asking any questions. The manager suggested a cab, and that they would pay our return fare after our first destination--so we could see if our ACTUAL RENTAL CAR had been returned yet. We left for Breakfast about 45 minutes after I directed them to contact the registered guest they had given my car to. I usually tip the valet guys... I didn't. Nothing was easy with this Hotel. I spent over 3 hours during my stay talking with staff about simple things like checking in, and late checkout availability. I recommend going to a different SPG property. July 10, 2014

I have stayed at 5 star hotels within the United States and Europe…I have never received the quality of personal service that I enjoyed during my stay at the iconic "Pink Palace." I also love the boutique feel of the hotel, rather than the monster size of other respected establishments. The hotel is steps away from decadent shopping sprees and entertainment. July 8, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Annoying "Resort Fee" Although I know most luxury properties follow this practice, it is no less annoying. The only amemity I was able to take advantage of was the morning coffee which ran out of cream and I don't know if it wass ever replenished. I gave up after around 20-30 minutes and went into the restaurant and got some off an empty table. I thought the chairs and umbrellas would be part of this fee but found out not only they were not but had to be reserved up to a year in advance. Had I known that I could have reserved them before I came I was able to get the last set one day by being there at 6:30 before they opend to be first in line. Our remote control didn't work one night and we were told one would be sent right up. After waiting 45 minutes I called back and told them to forget it we were going to bed. It is a beautiful property and the staff was mostly very nice but the resort fee still annoys me. July 7, 2014

Each day whether leaving or entering the hotel your staff addressed us by name with well wishes. A very welcoming environment that showed geniue appreciation for our business. July 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Oasis in Waikiki The Royal Hawaiian is an oasis in the middle of Waikiki. Set back off the road, with quiet gardens and the best beach access in Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian is the only way to go for a real, luxurious resort experience. The staff is top notch and the food and facilities are wonderful. This is not a budget friendly hotel, but as long as you go in with this in mind, you will enjoy splurging. The pool is small (can use the Sheraton's Helumoa pool next door) but it is less crowded than those nearby and our kids preferred it. June 26, 2014

Rated 2 out of 5 by Very Disappointed As a Lifetime Premier Gold member with over 500 SPG nights, I usually get a decent room when staying at Starwood Hotels. After waiting almost 20 minutes to check in (I was the only person waiting in line) I was given a very small garden view room dirctly across the hall from the maid station and the service elevator. This hotel rarely recognizes my status and could not of "upgraded" me to a worse room. The bathroom was the size of a small closet and the furniture was vintage 1960. Yes, I'm bitter. June 23, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Very disappointing experience I have over 500 SPG nights and travel to Honolulu on business regularly. The wait to check in (20 minutes) was not pleasant as I was the only person in line at the time. The process takes way too long. I was given an "upgrade" which happened to be garden view, across the hall from the maid's closet and service elevator. The room had a tiny bathroom and the furniture was out of the 1960's. Very, very disappointing, although the guy who parked my car was really nice. June 21, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Hard to find the location of the hotel I drove to find the hotel at night, but could not find it for the first time. Although I used my GPS, but it also did not tell me where the hotel was located. I drove around the area for about 20 min and finally find it after asking a question to some walking people. If there is a big traffic sign to be noticed easily at night, it will make easier for people to find the hotel and get the hotel more attractive. June 18, 2014

Rated 5 out of 5 by Beautiful hotel, great location, romantic getaway We traveled to the Royal Hawaiian for our first trip to Hawaii and stayed a total of seven days. The hotel staff was very friendly upon check-in and the hospitality continued for our entire stay. The location of the hotel is great for reaching shops, restaurants, and other hotels. We loved that many of the nearby hotels were also under the Starwood banner so we could charge drinks and dinner to our room while visiting other hotel bars and restaurants. The ONLY negatives were the high cost of food (which should be expected-TIP! Try to find a package online that includes breakfast vouchers as we easily paid $100 for two meals and a mimosa each morning) and the very thin walls in the historic wing. We were awakened almost every night or early morning by our neighbors, literaly hearing every word of their conversations. It was so bad and the walls were so thin that we could tell we went through three different occupants next door during our 7-day stay. It was a shame to be in such a nice room with a beautiful view of the ocean but unable to get a good night sleep after a day of adventure. However, we know this is part of staying in an old, historic location so we did not mind it much. Overall, this hotel was a gem if you don't mind being in the hustle and bustle of Honolulu...which we enjoyed. The spa was great, too, we had a very nice couples massage that was amazing!! We are already planning our trip back...and will stay at the Royal Hawaiian, of course. Thank you for making our romantic getaway all that we expected and much, much, more! June 16, 2014

Being able to hang out on the beach all day with chairs and an umbrella was a treat and the next day at the pool was delightful. Will definitely return! June 16, 2014

Rated 5 out of 5 by Second stay We came back here after visiting for a week in February. We felt so spoiled that I don't think we'll ever book a different hotel in Honolulu ever again! The staff is very knowledgeable and attentive to every need. The grounds are immaculate. The view from the ocean front rooms are exceptional. The only two things I would recommend would be to get new umbrellas in the Mai Tai Bar, they are covered in mildew. Secondly, the pool/hot tub needs to stay open past 7pm. Add some lights and keep it open longer. It's so relaxing to have a night swim or dip in the hot tub in the moonlight. But in no way do these minor things take away from the wonderful stay I had. Rated 3 out of 5 by Great iconic hotel in historic location though it's in the details While this hotel is in the most amazing location and the history behind this hotel is fantastic, I don't think I would return unless I was using SPG points like I did this time. The room I had was an upgraded beautiful room with the ocean view directly in front of me and a nice sized balcony. The negatives: -The room itself had a slight musty smell to it. -The gym is pretty lame - has no mirrors, stretch mats and another person walked in after I did and said the same thing I was thinking, "this is it???" - The shower pressure is pretty low and had an adjustable shower head that didn't help with the pressure. - The staff is superfriendly at the front desk and car valet. Though upon checkout, I brought my own bags down and the car valet/doorman brought my heavy rolling bag down in front of where my jeep was parked and then walked away, nowhere to be found. I was left to heft my own luggage into my car with noone to help. I've never had that happen before at a hotel! - I wanted to get coffee at 915am one day and they have a policy of taking the coffee away at 9am so I had to go to their outdoor restaurant, wait for a mgr to ask where I could get a cup of coffee to bring to my room, then she had to send a server to come up to me to order the coffee and then after, the paperwork to charge it to my room. It took 15 min to do that. If they could leave the coffee to 9:30am like the Modern Honolulu does (they actually leave it out until 10am). People are on vacation and can't always be early to rise. - Also, paying $50 to use the beach chairs in front of the resort seemed steep to me. $20 if you use them after 2pm. - Went to Mai Tai Bar for lunch one day. Sat at the bar. The server was incredibly nice and helpful. Though there was a smell at the bar where I sat closer to the beach side that comes from not smelling like they cleaned their mats well enough behind the bar. Pluses: 1) Welcome amenities of champagne and fruit, banana bread was a really nice touch. 2) The location right on the most beautiful part of waikiki beach. 3) being able to rent a paddleboard, surfboard and boogie boards right in front of the hotel and go straight to the water May 31, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Classic Architecture The hotel is a magnificent example of what is sadly missing in today's modern, soulless mega-resorts. Our predecessors -not all that long ago- knew how to create an environment that spoke to our need for comfort and luxury outside of comfy beds, a/c and fancy plumbing. Rated 3 out of 5 by So very very disappointed Booked this stay 7 months ago to celebrate our 10th Anniversary and our kid's first visit to Hawaii. We were so excited to stay here again since it was our honeymoon location. Since arriving, it has been one disappointment after another. The check in process took almost 45 minutes only to find out our room wasn't ready. 30 minutes later, we were able to get the key and go to the room. Our bags met us there 30 minutes later. Then, before leaving for dinner for the evening, I called guest services with a request while we were gone. 3 hours later, we returned to find that not one thing had been done! My fond memories of this hotel have certainly been ruined and we cannot get to our next Hawaiian destination soon enough. The Royal Hawaiian needs a real "service" wake up call. This is no way to treat customers especially ones who are Platinum Starwood customers. May 24, 2014
