W, Bali was a superb experience. Here's why:
1) The Ocean facing room was awesome. We spent top dollar for the room, but it was worth it. Very spacious, clean, good amenities. There were sofas to lounge in the room and balcony. Hanging out in the room didn't feel boring at all. We got personalized cocktail in the room on our anniversary, that felt special.
2) The Bose music system in the room and the selection of lounge music was awesome. We were very impressed. I love trance/house music and lounge music all day long made our day. Something as mundane as getting ready for the night, with the music in the room playing - felt as if the party's already started !!
3) Many places in the hotel to sit, lounge, relax. Multi-layered pool was quite nice. You get your space without bumping into another guest inside the pool. Woobar beside the pool was a click. We used to get cocktails while sun-bathing at the poolside. Very relaxing.
4) DJ Wilson's music at Woobar was awesome. He's a great guy, even played music to our choices. Typically DJ's are snobbish, but he was a friendly chap. Way to go Wilson - I'm listening to your mix while typing this :)
5) The property was huge, variety of areas to walk around, take pictures, hang out. Staff was warm and helpful.
6) My wife and I are vegetarians. At breakfast, the chefs were hospitable enough to prepare something special for us each day (other than the buffet menu available to us).
7) Only negative thing was the food, especially for vegetarians. Not much on offer here, so we relied on outside restaurants.
Overall the vibe at W, Bali was very energetic, young, hip and classy. I think we spent a lot of time at the property and forgot to visit other places in Bali. Now that's the best compliment a Resort Hotel can get !!! Way to go.

My girlfriend and I just got back from a two-week stay at the W Retreat and Spa Bali. We had a great holiday in Bali and for a large part because of the W. Even before arriving at the Retreat, we had a very pleasant experience with the staff. E.g. after completing my reservation, I was contacted by one of the reservation agents to offer VIP immigration service and an airport pick-up (both I would highly recommend).
After a short drive from the airport we entered the Retreat’s half a mile long driveway that I would call epic to say the least (if you want to exit the Retreat by foot to explore Seminyak, make sure to grab a buggy from the lobby to the main gate). SPG recognition is good at this property, as we were automatically upgraded upon check-in.
During the first part of our holiday we stayed in a Spectacular Ocean Glimpse room. Everyone should know that all rooms (excluding the marvelous and wow suites) within the retreat are the same, however, they differ in view. As you enter the room, the first thing you notice is the bathroom that is to die for. Make sure you request a room on a floor that has the skylights in the shower. The room was very spacious and beautifully decorated and really felt like a home away from home. The only drawback on the Ocean Glimpse rooms is the construction that is going on. You can see and hear the waves from your balcony, however, your eye will also catch the attention of the construction. So if it is ocean views you appreciate, make sure to get an ocean facing room.
Breakfast at Fire is simply put the best buffet breakfast that we ever had experienced. Not just the food is delicious, the staff is very attentive as well. The breakfast host remembered our names and room number. Also, the waiters remembered what our favorite food was and asked if we wanted to order the same thing again.
The pool area at WET is a good place to bask in the sun, with plenty of sunbeds available and attentive staff to order drinks or lunch. The sea in Seminyak can get quit rough so it isn’t allowed to swim in it, however we very much enjoyed watching the waves roll in. One of the Retreat’s dining venues, Starfish Bloo, overlooks the beach and pool area and is a great place to eat if you’re in to seafood. Gym facilities are great as well, so is the spa. One thing I love about W hotels is the cozy chill out spots that you can find throughout the entire hotel, and this property is no different. The WooBar is an architectural masterpiece and a good place to have cocktails and enjoy warm Balinese evenings. For our tours trough Bali, we both used taxi’s and hotel cars. For the longer trips I would advise using a hotel car, for a quick stop around the block grab a cab, as they cost next to nothing.
We upgraded to a Villa for the last couple of days during our stay. The Villa’s are breathtaking and ideal if you value privacy and tranquility. The only drawback was that we found the water pressure to be very low. I’ve read a lot about the paths surrounding the villa’s to be uncomfortable to walk on, which is true, that’s way there is 24 hour valet service. Just dial whatever/whenever and there will be a buggy ready to pick you up within 10 minutes.
Overall, it has been a very pleasant experience to stay at the W Bali. Had a chance to speak to the GM just before we were about to leave and seemed like a nice person. We noticed that the GM was walking around the property almost 24/7 making sure everything was perfect and setting the right example for the staff.
As I struggled for a long time to decide which room to book, I would advise the following. If you value ocean view, go for the ocean facing rooms and not the ocean glimpse rooms. If it privacy you value, go for the Villa, as they are about the same price.
We would like to thank the whole staff for making our stay so pleasant.

Caos at checkin and zero membership recognition, when i asked for a upgrade i was told that the hotel was full both nights we had booked. When waiting for the room (that we only got at 4pm) i checked the website and i could book suites both days...after confronting the duty manager i was offered an upgrade on the second day. One thing that surprised me was that people go down to the pool early in the morning and place their towels to block the sun beds and the hotel allows it!!! When me and my wife went to the pool around 11am there was NO SUN BEDS AVAILABLE but the pool area was less then half full, so we had to go down to the beach. When the sunday brunch started the pool turned into battleground of screaming and fighting kids.

We enjoyed breakfast and the bar near the beach each night but were disappointed with how the pool loungers were managed. Many guest put a towel and a magazine down and disappear for hours eating breakfast, etc. There were many attentive attendants so perhaps better to have them coordinate.
Also, as a Gold member I expected to automatically have late checkout. However, while rushing back to our room to collect our bags while our car was waiting for us, I was surprised to find that we had already been locked out of our room. Standard checkout time is 12:00 and it was 12:01. Out room was at the far end of one wing so this wasted at least 30 minutes as I had to walk back down and wait for someone to appear at the front desk, then to reset my room key, then walk all the way back to my room to get the bags. Should at least extend 1 hour after the standard time.
We were also very disappointed with the lack of suggestions on things to see and do in Seminyak. They basically said nothing really.
Overall it didn't feel like a Bali experience and we were disappointed by the lock out. I would look for other options in the area next time.

We stayed 5nights at W hotel bali. Started with a transfer from the airport in a nicely air conditioned BMW X5 (arranged at time of booking room).. Staff member waited for us in the arrivals area outside of baggage claim, with a iPad sign to show the W and our name (very cool and much better than other hotels) He was lovely and took our bags and had water waiting. The driver was fantastic, knew how to get in a out of traffic and was very comfortable, good music to.
At the entrance you are greeted by a lovely security team (makes you feel very at peace with a secure check of vehicle). You then drive down another long drive to the entrance. Again another sea of smiling staff. Check in was very easy, staff members lovely and greeted with cold drink, early check in was granted (great work team).
Then to the room, we stayed in a one bedroom pool villa, which for our luck was close to the reception. Be warned some need a buggy to get to and from. It was nice, would I say 5star hmmm maybe not. For two years old it is VERY aged. My husband and I are frequent travellers and have stayed at several 5star hotels in bali which were a higher standard. The room was very clean and same with pool. The room has aged, tiles in bathroom are cracked, mirror chipped, bath looks 20years old. Everything just needs a but of a refresh. Then we went to sleep (or tried) the air con sounded like a jet plane was landing in our room. After two nights of sweat and jet plane we decided to call Whatever/Whenever (hotels concierge). They came within 5mins (as always great staff members). They did inform me that all the villas have the same issue from time of build (OVER TWO YEARS AGO) and that only a few rooms air com has been replaced (so highly recommend trying to get one if you stay). They said they are slowly replacing each room. Great for future guest but not for us as paying current customers.
The food is AMAZING! We ate at all bars/restaurants at the hotel including room service. It was perfect really great. Just remember you have to pay gov tax and hotel service charge on top of the bill (glass of verve is $57 AUD a glass) .
the whatever/whenever is a great idea and the staff did everything plus what we requested. On our second day we walked to breakfast and 4 different staff members all said good morning to us by first and last name (very good for people we have never meet).
With the issues we had we would still stay again, maybe would not have such a high expectation from top 5star, but with the service from the more than friendly staff we would.
Thank you again to all of the staff at the hotel, you are such lovely people and really should be recognised of such a high standard of service. From the front desk to the Gardner to the service staff all so lovely.

We went literally to the other side of the globe, and while we were incredibly underwhelmed by Bali itself, the trip was saved by The W. And for us, W really is for "WOW."
At first, we were saddened by the fact that there really isn't a beach. It doesn't matter. The pool is so incredible that you don't want/need a beach.
The rooms are gorgeous, pristine and well-designed. The Bose system is an impressive touch (and the rooms are truly soundproof). THe balconies are amazing and have a surprisingly high level of privacy. Many had hammocks -- ours did not.
The bathrooms are heavenly. You will find yourself spending an absurd amount of time in the bathroom. They are generous with their Bliss products (by providing full-size).
The restaurants are all amazing. The breakfast/brunch buffet is like nothing you've ever seen. Really expensive, so opt to use Starpoints (a really good deal with points).
Be sure to visit the library. Service is excellent.
You'll never want to leave.

We liked it so much last year, we came back again. Amazing hotel, great setting, and most of all great people (talent)! They make you feel comfortable with their unmatched hospitality. We were upgraded to a Marvelous Suite and my son to an Ocean Facing Retreat. From Craig (General Manager), Nanik (SPG Manager), to the employees, especially Dika at the W Lounge, the service and friendliness is very much appreciated. Strongly suggest that everyone give the W at Semniyak a visit...you will keep on returning!!
