Welcome to vibrant and dynamic Shanghai. China’s largest city, it sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River on the mainland’s central-eastern coast. For breathtaking views, take a ride to the top of the nearby Oriental Pearl Tower. A modern landmark, it is the tallest TV tower in Asia and the third highest in the world. Inspiring panoramas can also be found in the Pudong area on the 100th floor observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC), one of the world’s tallest buildings. Or, enjoy a stroll along The Bund district’s waterfront and marvel at the city’s sprawling skyline, an area that has symbolized the city since the 1920s.

For an even more antiquated look at the city’s history, visit the Shanghai Museum, home to ancient Chinese art and 120,000 precious relics. Next, experience Xintiandi. This storied pedestrian street is lined with renovated old stone gatehouses called shikumen, which today houses shops, restaurants, bars and cafés. Another historic yet fashionable area filled with shopping and dining is the French Concession, where European architecture is re-energized with Chinese styling. Also popular is the artist area Tianzifang, home to many artistic boutiques, cafés, and the Yishanghai Art Museum.

Shopping also abounds on Nanjing Road, considered China’s top commercial street, and Huaihai Zhong Road, which is packed with designer boutiques, department stores, shopping plazas, and jewelry shops. If you like dumplings, there is no better place to eat them than Shanghai. Called xiao long bao, the steamed soup buns traditionally have 18 folds and are filled with pork, seafood, or vegetables.
