Gather and explore Colombo’s wide range of attractions. There are a number of interesting religious structures in the area, including the Gangaramaya Temple. Situated near Beira Lake, the eclectic site also contains a library, and a museum filled with spectacular antiques and Buddhist relics. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is another famous temple, believed to be where the Buddha preached 2,000 years ago. Before entering the temple, devotees walk around the sacred tree seven times. In addition to its famous reclining Buddha statue, an impressive collection of Buddhist paintings depict significant events in the Buddha’s life. Wolvendaal Church, Colombo’s oldest, is also unique. Built in 1749 and filled with Dutch furniture and elegant workmanship, its stone floor includes elaborate tombstones of five Dutch governors.
For a taste of nature stroll through the city’s oldest and largest park Viharamadevi Park. Originally named Victoria Park, it is famous for its flowering trees, water channels and fountains. Nearby is the National Museum of Colombo. Housed in a colonial building, its exhibits include palm leaf manuscripts, books, ancient rock sculptures, royal weapons, paintings, and regalia of the 17th-century Kandyan Kings. More history can be found at the Dutch Period Museum containing Dutch-inspired artefacts.
Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities, including golf, whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, trekking, and bird watching. Or attend a cricket match, Sri Lanka’s favourite sport. Meanwhile, shopping enthusiasts should experience Colombo’s leading bazaar district, Pettah. Located close to the hotel, its narrow cobbled streets are lined with shops and street stalls offering everything imaginable.
