Surrounded by the Himalayas, the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu has a rich history that dates back almost 2,000 years. The Sheraton Kathmandu Hotel is conveniently located along the city’s main road, Kantipath. The Narayanhiti Palace Museum, once the Royal Palace for the kings of Nepal, is nearby, as are embassies, banks, and corporate offices. Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) can be reached by car in 40 minutes.
Take a 30-minute walk to the top of the highly revered Swayambhunath to soak in wonderful panoramic city and mountain views. Home to many monkeys and thus sometimes referred to as Monkey Temple, this large stupa is one of Nepal’s oldest religious sites. Built in the 5th century and deemed one of the most sacred sites for Tibetan Buddhism, Boudhanath is not to be missed. It is one of the world’s largest stupas. Nepal’s religious culture can also be appreciated along the banks of the Bagmati River at Pashupatinath. Deemed one of the oldest and holiest places of worship in the country, it is also one of the biggest Hindu complexes in South Asia.
Comprising three ancient cities—Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur—Kathmandu Valley is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of them, Durbar Square, is located in the heart of Kathmandu. Marvel at its spectacular palaces, monuments, and temples. Most of the buildings were built between the 15th and 18th centuries. You can also relax in the peaceful, neoclassical Garden of Dreams.
Visit Kathmandu’s most popular tourist area, Thamel, located adjacent to the hotel. It is filled with restaurants, bars, cafés, and wonderful shops. In addition to woolen items, pashmina shawls and scarves, clothing, and mountaineering equipment, look out for such traditional handicrafts as silver jewelry and carpets. Savor some delightful Nepalese cuisine, including ubiquitous dumplings called momos, dal, and kwati, a delicious Newari curry soup made with different beans.
