Quanzhou is highly regarded for its numerous types of oolong tea. Its most famous variety is Tieguanyin (Iron Goddess). Visit the China Tea Capital, then head to the nearby Qingshui Yan Temple. Built high on Penglai Mountain, this large Buddhist temple is surrounded by green pines and bamboo plants. In addition to its natural wonders, it also houses many cultural relics, including stone tablets that map out the mountain. Other scenic areas showcasing mountains, river valleys, and basins are Mounts Qingyuan, Zimao, Xiangong, and Lingxiu.
The city center has numerous places of interest, including the Kaiyuan Temple, the well-preserved East and West Pagodas, Qingjing Mosque, and Guandi Temple. The Puppet Museum and the Quanzhou Maritime Museum are both also excellent. Sample some unique local dishes, such as fried oysters, frozen siphon worms, noodles in meat soup, and fish pellets. Quanzhou also has a long history of making traditional handicrafts. Along with being one of China’s three porcelain capitals, this is a great place to find woven paper paintings, lacquered bamboo baskets, stone carvings, and puppet heads. These and other items can be found on Quanzhou’s commercial streets—Houcheng, Zhuangyuan, Daxi, and Zongshan Road.
