Tax Exempt Policy
In order to comply with Maryland State Tax law, the hotel must have in its files certain documentation from all guests who claim a sales tax exemption. A Maryland State Tax Exemption certificate must be presented to the hotel. Please note, tax exemption only applies to Maryland State Taxes and does not include local occupancy taxes.
All Tax Exempt sales must be made directly to and paid for by the Federal Government and its agencies and instrumentalities. A government employee who rents a hotel room and pays for it by cash, personal check or personal credit card is required to pay Maryland sales and use tax to the hotel. The tax is due on such transaction even though the Employee may have documentation provided by the government agency indicating that the purchaser is a government employee or may be reimbursed by the government for these expenses. Certain US government credit cards are exempt for travel purchase. Please check with the hotel to confirm your government credit card is approved for tax exempt travel purchases.
For non-profit charitable, educational or religious organizations, the tax exempt only applies to purchases made by the registered organization. It may not be used to purchase items for the personal use of officials, members or employees of the organization. An association attendee who rents a hotel room and pays for it by cash, personal check or personal credit card is required to pay Maryland sales and use tax to the hotel.
