Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice overall. Club lounge OK. Everything was fine but when ordering a Zinfandel in the club lounge I was given a White Zinfandel. Not the same thing but she said she had already poured it, so... not the best service in the Club Lounge. August 19, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent place to stay My group was very pleased on this hotel August 19, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by This hotel is the worst ever We stayed at this hotel for one week. The room was extremely dark and uncomfortable. For two consecutive days the room was not even cleaned! Do not stay at this hotel. August 17, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Helpful front desk attendants Checked in late Sunday, room wasn't what had been described when I made reservation. The personnel at the front desk promptly found us a better room, met us at the new room with a set of keys. I appreciated the willingness to satisfy, and do so promptly. Then same gentleman gave me a great recommendation for a local restaurant. Well done on all counts! August 11, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Fell Short of Past Visits Had to dicker with desk to obtain gold level upgrade. I'M Lifetime gold with long history of staying at this hotel. Ended up paying an addl $30 nite, another $150, to have upgraded room and Club amenities. Used to get this upgrade for no extra charge. The Club is open for brief periods only AM and early evening for nightly "hors d oueveres," Frid nite was cheese and crackers and some grapes. Didn't use other nites. Breakfast on par with most "free breakfast " at cheaper hotels. Lovely Club room, attendants excellent. 2 room "suite" is actually a small living room area, pull out couch, with door to large king size bed area BUT the bathroom is in bedroom which means a lot of door shutting, turning on lights etc. disturbing the king bed occupants. I would not pay for this "upgrade" again. Great locale, free parking/ airport shuttle, terrific driver took a bit of the sting out of what I paid in money and points. Used to be that gold level really meant something. Not any more. August 12, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Escalating Disappointment Over the course of this year I have accumulated 12 stays and 17 nights at this hotel for business travel. Each stay my impression of this hotel continues to decline. Upon my most recent trip the hotel continues to battle a sewage smell that permeates the property, even to my floor on the 10th floor. Elite status is often overlooked by all staff and you have to ask repeatedly for your amenities, like free wifi. When dealing with the front desk you would think the lines for all SPG properties ring there and the staff at the front desk prioritizes phone calls over dealing with guests. On top of this, my most recent trip to the property was on business and there was a reduced room rate. However, I was traveling with colleagues and knew we would be working on some projects and requested a larger room via the phone a few days prior. They said I would have a larger room on the club level. When I arrived the room was no different than those I was traveling with and yet I was paying an extra $90/night for the Club Level. When I inquired at the front desk (after waiting for the phone calls to end) I was told they would check with the manager and contact me. Never heard a word from them. I believe in the SPG brand but when I travel to Des Moines for business in the future I will seek a different property. October 23, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Check-in Wife & I arrived early afternoon & checked in for both our room & room for daughter who was arriving later. Rooms 703 & 706. When daughter arrived at 2 am, she was told there were no rooms available. Your staff wanted to send her 30 mins away to another property. After lengthy delay, they finally got their room. Not handled well! August 11, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by This hotel was atypical of other Sheraton Hotels Facilities did not meet our expectations. Room needed to be updated. Carpet was loose and coming off the floor. Bathroom was dated, tub was old and needed to be replaced. Coffee in room was great - Starbucks. AC outlets were plentiful. Bed was comfy. Buffet breakfast had a great variety and food was good. Rated 3 out of 5 by Average hotel Matthew (Manager) was not responsive to my needs. He would not acknowledge me when I requested assistance. Additional charges were added to my credit card for food by the restaurant and drinks at the bar. It was eventually resolved. Kids were knocking on doors, playing on the elevators and running throughout the hotel during late night hours. I had to stay awake to monitor our athletes rooms until 2:00 am to prevent the group kids from waking them. I requested assistance to stop the activity and did not receive until 2 nights before my departure. There were not enough towels available. I don't think that the hotel was prepared for the large number of guest. I do not plan to return to this city and will not recommend the use of the Sheraton for large groups. I would like to say that the housekeepers were very helpful, courteous and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. August 7, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by This hotel is not a good member of starwood This hotel could barely function. Upon checkin at 9:30 at night I waited online for nearly 15 min to check in and there was no special SPG guest line (which I am ,,a platinum member) I travel for work A LOT and wet out of my way from downtown in order to stay at this hotel- only to realize it could barely function as a business hotel. The speed of the staff was like a BnB! Also in the morning before I needed to check out and go to the airport, the front desk attendant was So slow in helping reverse a credit card charge for another woman, that he could not help me with any normal pace to get a new room key when I locked myself out. I tried to explain nicely that I needed to had to the airport but that did not matter, he moved so slow i could have broken into my room faster. Would NOT recommend. November 17, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sunshine The room was clean and very comfortable. August 11, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Hotel is very dirty A renovation is needed. Carpet stains all over, in room, in hallway, etc. Room had a sick sweet smell, like fermented peaches. Not at all pleasant. Bed was rock hard, and shower clogged up every day. Staff was pleasant. August 9, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Staff is awesome! Matt Glenn at the front desk is a great rep for SPG! He is knowledgeable, professional and super nice! He remembers me EVERY time I visit. August 8, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Would only stay becuse it's a Starwood property . First off let me say I am happy there is a Starwood propery in Des Moines . That being said , This property needs much improvement . Let's start with the Room : small ,out dated furniture, and I really don't think it was a "Sweet Sleeper Bed . Have been to so may Starwood properties with SSBeds 's but they never felf like this bed .Reminded me of a no tell motel bed . Not 'sweet' ! it was hard . . You could actually feel the springs . Not a good nights rest . Full hotel with noisey kids . Sound proofing not good . The sound echo's through the Atrium to the rooms ! The breakfast buffet was very average . Needs more class in it's presentation . The Elevators are a joke . Only 2 elevators and one was out of service much of the time . You can litteraly say this hotel really has it's ups and downs .Mostly downs ! On a positive note the staff was friendly at check-in, although they left out our breakfast coupons and I had to go ask for them . The culb lounge was quite nice . the whole hotel needs much work and a real upgrade .Not worth the money because the nights sleep was not good . June 30, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pleasantly Pleased! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay! Kanika was very professional, as well as, friendly and courteous. I am a huge fan of customer service and she exemplified excellence each day that we were there. Much kudos to her and the entire staff! August 5, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Concierge Lounge The gentleman in the concierge lounge was exceptional very friendly, helpful and accomadaiting. August 6, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Worn out hotel This is one of those worn out hotels, that not only hasn't been remodeled lately, it likely is exactly the same as it was when it opened in 1980 or whenever it opened. This property is worn out and needs help. I would not stay here again. Too many other choices of nicer hotels. November 17, 2011
Rated 2 out of 5 by Needs work Our room was located in a corner. The room was hot the whole night even though the thermostat was on 60. We did not have an exhaust in the bathroom. The room was very small. The rate was expensive. August 4, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great team! Everyone we interacted with was helpful and courteous. Great staff! July 31, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A gem in West Des Moines This is my favorite hotel to stay at when working in the Des Moines area. Always clean and comfortable with a friendly staff who go the extra mile for customers. Their are lots of amenities and the hotel frequently updates the property to make your stay even better. Great location for reaching all of my clients, and located near several major highways. July 27, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by kkd We had a great experience during our stay ,the staff was more than helpful. We had breakfast 2 of the mornings we stayed there and Emily was there both days and always had a smile on her face and was always making sure we had what we needed. July 28, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good spot A friendly staff and all the amenities in an aging but well-maintained facility. July 28, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Sign in the Night Just driving through your city late & saw the Sheraton sign in red! July 27, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Always a great stay! This is one of the few hotels I stay at where I wake up and feel like I'm in my own bed. The staff is excellent and friendly. I will stay here repeatedly when in Des Moines, IA! July 25, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Bummed This hotel wasn't up to the normal Sheraton standards. The staff wasn't overly friendly or helpful. We had 2 rooms that were connecting and they did not change our sheets for 3 full nights. I called and asked if they would please change the sheets in both rooms. I was told yes absolutely. Our sheets were never changed. When I called again about this of course they were sorry , but no attempt to change them!! I will say the chef at the breakfast buffet was super friendly and the food he made was good. July 25, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great place My wife and I were the parents of the groom and hosted the reception at the Sheraton. This place was awesome. Everything rated an excellent from us. I would recommend this to our friends. Thank you for all the great times. May 12, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Promotions I had booked our hotel stay on-line a couple of weeks in advance. We had found a "Special" that offered a room with a king sized bed, sofa sleeper and a Coke/Amazon promotion. Our credit card was charged in advance for our reservation. When we arrived to check in we were given a small bag with 2 cans of Coke and a small Coke Cola bear - we were told the $25.00 Amazon Gift card would be sent to my email account, which the front desk verified was correct. It has been 3 days so far and no email with the gift card has arrived. They do have my correct email address as I received my confirmation letter and a survey request. The room was nice. clean, and the bed comfortable. The staff at the front desk were not able to give us detailed directions to a near-by venue, which I found odd since this venue had a link directly on their web site for ONLY this hotel being close by. Rated 5 out of 5 by Comfortable, Clean & Close to Everything I've stayed at this hotel for 3 years in a row. Every year I have seen improvements and upgrades in the room as far as furnishings & bathroom features. The staff is courteous. It is a beautiful hotel, and it is close to shopping and restaurants. The Conservation Districts of Iowa Conference has been held here for several years. It is a great place to hold our annual conference. September 6, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Hotel The staff was excellent and the accomodations we very nice. July 19, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Easily could have been better A lovely, business-geared hotel, with great amenties IF you're allowed to use them. I never understood any hotel who didn't let groups use their lobby/table areas for congregating, particularly when you have MANY teams staying in your hotel. Water had a very strong sulfur smell. Housekeeping was excellent, though the carpet throughout needs serious cleaning or replacement. July 31, 2012
