Rated 3 out of 5 by It could have been better. My associate and myself were in Des Moines for business. She chose a downtown hotel and I settled for Sheraton, primarily because it was an spg preferred hotel. The rooms were clean and general friendliness of staff were fine and it was pretty much like my usual experience with spg hotels, good. On the check out day, I was running late in a meeting. I requested a late check out for 3pm. My associate got that for her hotel. My hotel refused and asked me for $50 for an hour beyond the check out time. I realized that for things running smoothly spg or no spg, every place does a decent job with helping guests out. A hotel or for that matter a starwood preferred program should stand out by being able to deal with a unique problem that a guest can face. A lazy answer of "policy says that and this is what you have to pay" does not become Sheraton or any other hotel participating in preferred programs. Both herself, who is a lawyer and myself a physician, felt unaccommodated and ended up cutting our meeting short and stopping a client in his conversation, that "sorry my hotel is not helping me, I should probably have stayed somewhere better". So much Sheraton and so much for the spg program. June 3, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Still fav hotel, however . . . This hotel has been serving the same limited choices for room service years! There is a handful of reasonably priced ($15 or under) items that tend to be greasy sandwiches. I think should change the menu maybe quarterly on a rotating basis or simply change it. I wanted to order room service both nights I stayed recently but didn't due to the choices. The tempeture in the room is not truly individually regulated; no matter how much I turn it down, the temperature still hovers around 70 degrees; for someone who likes to sleep cool, that doesn't work well. I had left my curling iron at home; would be nice to have loaners available for things people might tend to forget. Also would be nice to have a refidgerator in the basic rooms especially when one is staying for more than one night. Nevertheless, this is still my favorite hotel. It is very comfortable and the environment is really nice. The inside is beautiful; you can stand outside your room and look down onto the entire lobby area from whatever floor you are on; has a nice waterfall and clear glass elevator. Unless there is a large conference going on, the elevator is very fast. Also would be nice to have Bravo channel as a TV choice. May 28, 2012

Rated 2 out of 5 by Upgrade failure! I travel a bit for business and have come to have some knowledge in the ammenities afforded most travelers. My wife booked a weekend get away for the family and was excited to inform me that she had recieved an opportunity to upgrade to a Suite from our King room. I was disappointed and surprised to learn that with Sheraton, a Suite definition meant that our King room had a fridge and micro-wave. Items that in my travels are standard in comparable rooms. Staff did adjust us to a proper Suite with seperated lounge and sleep areas. Staff was courterous and made the adjustment promptly, but as a guest to a Sheraton property I should not have been the one to initiate this upgrade. This leads me to believe that Sheraton and Starwood Hotels employ and encourage bait and switch sales tactics amoung staff at booking in the hopes that they can absorb a higher fee from an unsuspected traveler. After this experience I would not recommend Sheraton for other than a business trip where this is my only option, and have expresed to my wife and our extended family that for future such weekend or overnight get aways they seek out other family oriented accomidations. Truely dissappointed and did not live up to the standards of cutomer service I expected from a Sheraton. March 31, 2014
