Rated 2 out of 5 by Terrible Smell Our room smelled like either somebody who hadn't showered for a month or a deodorizer trying to cover-up the odor of somebody who hadn't showered for a month. Elevators were filled with wet unchaperoned childern who the hotel eventually assigned their own security guard. Bar had an excellent selection of wine and the bartender indulged us with late night bar snacks because there was other food available after 11PM. June 30, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Needs Work This hotel did not come close to meeting my expectations for a Sheraton. I checked in late in the evening and the floor in my room was wet, it was 10:30 at night and I had to switch to another room. I got to that room and it had a horrible smell. I did not want to deal with moving all of my stuff yet again, so I stayed assuming it would fade. It did not. There was no bathroom fan, or ability to open windows, so I was stuck with it. I felt dirty the entire stay and checked out early, even though I was charged $75 just to leave. I did not want to stay there even one more night. If my conference was not at the hotel, I would have left the night I got there and stayed somewhere else. I complained about both things and was not offered anything for the inconvience. I will never stay there again, and I will tell my friends not to stay there. The only nice thing I can say is that the food was very good. June 30, 2014

Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice rooms, great staff I typically stay here when I travel to Des Moines. The rooms are nicely appointed and the bed is comfy. It's also closely situated near a number of restaurants and shopping, like Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, etc. I stayed in suite 233 this week. Only problem I had was with the sink in the outer bathroom, which didn't drain. The one inside the bathroom was fine, though, so I used that. June 27, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Desperately needs upgrade This hotel is in desperate need of repairs. From the moment you walk in, you can tell it hasn't seen a fresh coat of paint since Beverly Hills 90210 was on the air. The carpet throughout is full of stains and my first room assignment wreaked, with a giant burn hole in the carpet in the middle of the room. Second room was better, but only to find critter in the bathroom and no hot water. AVOID! June 25, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not impressed 2nd shift desk was great. So called suites are okay, more like longer rooms. Nothing special overall here. Night auditors are funny birds but this one took it yo new heights. Crazy altercation between hotel staff and "guests" early in the morning. No desire for business guests, much less platinums, more of a "friends and family" scene here. June 24, 2014

Rated 2 out of 5 by Not in keeping with Sheraton standards Due to its location I understand why this hotel may not be the same quality as other Sheraton hotels I have stayed in. But that does not pardon poor customer service. When i returned from work I found my room had not been cleaned. So I called guest services who did not pick up the phone. So I walked down to guest services and was told they were very busy. I told them I would be leaving for dinner in an hour so they could have my room cleaned. An hour later I reminded them. When i returned after dinner two hours later the room had still not been cleaned. when the gentleman from housekeeping finally arrived I was asked if I wanted the whole room cleaned!!!. The rundown condition of the hotel may be overlooked with good customer service. June 12, 2014

Rated 1 out of 5 by Escalating Disappointment Over the course of this year I have accumulated 12 stays and 17 nights at this hotel for business travel. Each stay my impression of this hotel continues to decline. Upon my most recent trip the hotel continues to battle a sewage smell that permeates the property, even to my floor on the 10th floor. Elite status is often overlooked by all staff and you have to ask repeatedly for your amenities, like free wifi. When dealing with the front desk you would think the lines for all SPG properties ring there and the staff at the front desk prioritizes phone calls over dealing with guests. On top of this, my most recent trip to the property was on business and there was a reduced room rate. However, I was traveling with colleagues and knew we would be working on some projects and requested a larger room via the phone a few days prior. They said I would have a larger room on the club level. When I arrived the room was no different than those I was traveling with and yet I was paying an extra $90/night for the Club Level. When I inquired at the front desk (after waiting for the phone calls to end) I was told they would check with the manager and contact me. Never heard a word from them. I believe in the SPG brand but when I travel to Des Moines for business in the future I will seek a different property. October 23, 2012

Rated 2 out of 5 by This hotel is not a good member of starwood This hotel could barely function. Upon checkin at 9:30 at night I waited online for nearly 15 min to check in and there was no special SPG guest line (which I am ,,a platinum member) I travel for work A LOT and wet out of my way from downtown in order to stay at this hotel- only to realize it could barely function as a business hotel. The speed of the staff was like a BnB! Also in the morning before I needed to check out and go to the airport, the front desk attendant was So slow in helping reverse a credit card charge for another woman, that he could not help me with any normal pace to get a new room key when I locked myself out. I tried to explain nicely that I needed to had to the airport but that did not matter, he moved so slow i could have broken into my room faster. Would NOT recommend. November 17, 2011

Rated 1 out of 5 by Worn out hotel This is one of those worn out hotels, that not only hasn't been remodeled lately, it likely is exactly the same as it was when it opened in 1980 or whenever it opened. This property is worn out and needs help. I would not stay here again. Too many other choices of nicer hotels. November 17, 2011

Rated 3 out of 5 by Bummed This hotel wasn't up to the normal Sheraton standards. The staff wasn't overly friendly or helpful. We had 2 rooms that were connecting and they did not change our sheets for 3 full nights. I called and asked if they would please change the sheets in both rooms. I was told yes absolutely. Our sheets were never changed. When I called again about this of course they were sorry , but no attempt to change them!! I will say the chef at the breakfast buffet was super friendly and the food he made was good. July 25, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by This hotel needs to focus on guests The room was ok, but had a hard time staying cool. We ran out of tissues and toilet paper. Since we were staying 2 nights. I assumed it would be replenished during cleaning. It wasn't. The public restrooms in the hotel weren't any better. Pool is small. Front desk acted like we were inconveniencing them with a request. Hotel is very loud because of the design. Two elevators are not enough for 10 floors of rooms. May 26, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by good, except... I had called ahead to reserve adjoining rooms and was told to call back the day of check in. I did that and was told they were all taken. When we checked in we found out that our two rooms had a room between us. Fine expect it was adjoining to one of our reserved rooms! I called down and was able to have it changed so that we'd have the side-by-side rooms. Also, at check in we guaranteed our rooms with a credit card, but wanted to pay cash and told them so. They charged our rooms to the CC anyway which was a huge inconvenience to us. How ever the rooms are clean and well-kept and quiet. May 5, 2014

Rated 3 out of 5 by Promotions I had booked our hotel stay on-line a couple of weeks in advance. We had found a "Special" that offered a room with a king sized bed, sofa sleeper and a Coke/Amazon promotion. Our credit card was charged in advance for our reservation. When we arrived to check in we were given a small bag with 2 cans of Coke and a small Coke Cola bear - we were told the $25.00 Amazon Gift card would be sent to my email account, which the front desk verified was correct. It has been 3 days so far and no email with the gift card has arrived. They do have my correct email address as I received my confirmation letter and a survey request. The room was nice. clean, and the bed comfortable. The staff at the front desk were not able to give us detailed directions to a near-by venue, which I found odd since this venue had a link directly on their web site for ONLY this hotel being close by. Rated 5 out of 5 by Comfortable, Clean & Close to Everything I've stayed at this hotel for 3 years in a row. Every year I have seen improvements and upgrades in the room as far as furnishings & bathroom features. The staff is courteous. It is a beautiful hotel, and it is close to shopping and restaurants. The Conservation Districts of Iowa Conference has been held here for several years. It is a great place to hold our annual conference. September 6, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Easily could have been better A lovely, business-geared hotel, with great amenties IF you're allowed to use them. I never understood any hotel who didn't let groups use their lobby/table areas for congregating, particularly when you have MANY teams staying in your hotel. Water had a very strong sulfur smell. Housekeeping was excellent, though the carpet throughout needs serious cleaning or replacement. July 31, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Clean room but lacking on services. Easy check in, friendly staff. I have attended many conferences at many similar types of motels, but this is the only one that charges guest to use internet in their room. Even Super 8's don't charge. I would not recommend this motel if that is an important issue for your stay, as most motels include that service free. The room was very clean and quiet. May 20, 2012

Basic things would be easy to fix: emptying trash containers, more than 1 bartender/wait person on busy weekend nights, providing free coffee in the lobby instead of charging$2.00 for coffee service. From the hotel shuttle driver offering advice on places to eat and personally drawing me a map, to the overwhelmingly courteous staff at the front desk and in the bar, to the great conversation I had with the staff in the Lounge on the top floor, I was very happy during my stay here. Rated 5 out of 5 by A pleasure to stay We were in town for a hockey tournament and from the time we entered the hotel till the time we left we were treated terrific. The staff was so friendly and helpful especially Kanika at the front desk. Cant wait for next year to stay again. December 16, 2013
