St. Regis Hotels & Resorts Champions Speed & Sport In The United Kingdom With The Fifth Annual St. Regis International Polo Cup
May 21, 2012- St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, part of Starwood Hotels
& Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT), hosted The 5th Annual St. Regis
International Cup (SRIC) on Saturday, May 19th 2011 at Cowdray Park Polo
Club. As the first international test match of the season, The St.
Regis International Cup saw England and the USA compete for the first time in
fifteen years to win the iconic and rarely-seen commemorative Queen’s Silver
Jubilee Cup. The highly anticipated international match is illustrative of the
luxury hotel brand’s commitment to the international sport of polo in numerous
destinations around the world, in partnership with American Express, the
official card of St. Regis Polo.
“With the Diamond Jubilee followed by a summer of sports in London, this is the perfect time to celebrate the long-standing heritage of polo in England with this year’s St. Regis International Cup,” says Paul James, Global Brand Leader, St. Regis and The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts. “Polo is an innate part of the St. Regis legacy; and in the past five years, it has been exciting to see this time-honored social tradition continue to manifest in the UK and around the world among a new generation of affluent travelers.”
The St. Regis International Cup was the first of four international test matches created by The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), the governing body for polo in the UK, to be played in England this year. SRIC comes on the heels of the thrilling Sentebale Polo Cup in Sao Paolo, Brazil this past March in which the charity’s founding patron, Prince Harry, competed against St. Regis team captain and Connoisseur, Nacho Figueras to win.
In honor of the Diamond Jubilee year, the 24-goal handicap match had teams competing for the iconic Silver Jubilee Cup, originally commissioned to mark the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen in 1977. Luke Tomlinson captained the England 24-goal team alongside James Beim, Malcolm Borwick and Ollie Cudmore defeating the 23-goal USA team: Paul Pieres, Jeff Hall, Nick Roldan and Marc Ganzi.
VIP guests were invited to watch the day’s match from St. Regis’ hospitality marquee where they were treated to the brand’s signature rituals such Afternoon Tea - The Lanesborough, a St. Regis Hotel’s award winning afternoon tea, and St. Regis’ signature cocktail, the Bloody Mary, first concocted at The St. Regis New York over 75 years ago.
St. Regis has long been associated with the world of polo, beginning in the early 20th century when polo and St. Regis’ founding family, the Astors, became part of the New York social scene. As St. Regis continues to grow globally, the brand expands its polo presence in nearly as many destinations, by supporting spirited polo matches and events in the United States, Bangkok, Singapore, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo in addition to hosting The St. Regis International Polo Cup in its fifth year.
As a hotel brand created for a new generation of luxury travelers, St. Regis is building on its portfolio of existing iconic hotels in destinations at the heart of the New Grand Tour itinerary as diverse as Aspen, Bal Harbour, Shenzhen and Abu Dhabi. Nearly tripling its portfolio in just five years, St. Regis will debut The St. Regis Abu Dhabi and The St. Regis Mauritius Resort later this year. Additionally St. Regis has announced plans to open hotels in Amman, Jordan; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Lijiang and Zhuhai in China and New Delhi in India.
St. Regis, through its signature St. Regis Aficionado program, has created an opportunity for its global guests to experience The St. Regis International Polo Cup among other polo events around the world.
