Nestled in the Sahyadri Mountains, small and picturesque Lonavala is a famed hill station located in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Amid lush green hills, The Westin Khandala Resort & Spais ideally located along the Mumbai-Pune Express Highway. Pune International Airport (PNQ) is a little more than an hour’s drive away, and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) can be reached in approximately 90 minutes.
Enrich both mind and soul at the ancient Buddhist rock caves found at Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves, and Bedsa. Dating back nearly 2,000 years, astounding shrines were carved out of rock by ancient Hinayana Buddhist monks. Inside the caves, you can view storytelling inscriptions, carvings, and sculptures. Soak in the serene views at the celebrated Shivaji Fort and Vaghjai Dari at Rajmachi Point. Visapur, a fort highlighted by its protective walls and intricate designs, and its nearby twin fort Lohagad are also legendary. Built in the 17th century during the Shivaji period, each played a crucial historical role in India’s rich past.
Encompassing rolling hills, captivating waterfalls, and lush greenery, Lonavala offers many natural scenic attractions. Trek on one of the area’s many invigorating trails, such as Duke’s Nose and Tiger’s Leap. For those interested in nature without a major excursion, there are numerous places to take a refreshing walk on gentler slopes. Popular with visitors, Tungarli Lake is incredibly picturesque, as is Ryewood Park & Shivaji Udyan, a beautiful landscaped garden containing an old Shiva Temple. Other places of interest include Lonavala Lake, Lohagad and Lion’s Point, Nagphani, Vaghdari, Khandala Dari, and Karla Casag. In addition to replenishing your body with local gastronomic delights, don’t miss sampling Lonavala’s famed chikki, a traditional Indian sweet made with jaggery and nuts.
