Surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and set in a scenic valley along the banks of the holy Pushkar Lake, Pushkar is a famous Hindu pilgrimage town in the Ajmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The Westin Pushkar Resort & Spa is just minutes from many of the town’s top attractions. Jaipur International Airport (JAI) can be reached by car in less than three hours.
Meaning “lotus flower” in Sanskrit, Pushkar is filled with rich history. Engage in an uplifting walking tour around town to see Pushkar’s many temples, including the Brahma Temple. Built during the 14th century, it is one of the only temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the Hindu god who created the universe. Climb up the steps of the Savitri Temple—built in honour of Lord Brahma’s wife—and admire the spectacular lake and surrounding views that are particularly majestic at sunrise. The beautiful Pap Mochini Temple and Rangji Temple are also noteworthy. Not far from Pushkar, Ajmer is another important holy centre and is highlighted by its most famous attraction, the Dargah Sharif.
Take an adventurous sunrise or sunset camel safari through the sand dunes in the Great Indian Desert, and marvel at the exceptional scenery. Witness pilgrims bathing in the 52 bathing ghats that surround Pushkar Lake. Attend one of the numerous colourful festivals and fairs held throughout the year, such as the annual Pushkar Camel Fair in November. In addition to exciting horse and camel races, this five-day fair includes vibrant folk music, dancing, and magic shows.
Browse the small shops at the Sadar Bazaar for textiles, jewellery, miniature paintings, and other local handicrafts. Find serenity at a yoga class or take a cooking class to learn how to prepare traditional Indian cuisine. After a day of activity, recharge with some of Pushkar’s delightful vegetarian dishes.
