Taxis are readily available, as are the trains, trams, and buses that comprise the city's efficient public transport network, highly recommended for visiting city attractions. Metcards can be pre-purchased—in two-hour, daily, weekly or monthly periods—on Metlink's website and at Premium Stations, as well as on board trams and buses or at retail outlets displaying the blue Metcard sign.
For attractions outside the city, it is advisable to hire a car or book on a tour bus, as most of these destinations are not accessible by train.

Melbourne is an easy city to drive in due to its wide thoroughfares and simple grid city plan that is well sign-posted. In addition, Melbourne’s three major freeways—the West Gate, the Monash, and the Tullamarine—are conveniently linked by CityLink, a non-stop tolled expressway (visitors should confirm the toll arrangement with the car rental company at the time of pick-up).
The most important rule for travellers in Australia is that you drive on the left-hand side of the road. You must also have your licence. A driver’s licence from home will suffice for up to three months in Australia, as long as it has photo ID and it’s for the same class of vehicle you intend to drive.
Melbourne taxis are numerous and easy to spot—they are all uniformly yellow. Cabs often wait in designated ranks that are clearly signposted at central locations, like major hotels in the CBD or busy spots such as Flinders Street Station. You can also hail a taxi in the street or book one in advance by telephone.

Melbourne is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. Its predominantly flat landscape, abundant bike paths, and thriving bike-riding community make it a perfect city to explore on two wheels.
