Hotel History

The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, Los Angeles was designed and built by seminal hotel architect John C. Portman, who oversaw its two-year construction in the mid-1970s. Portman pioneered the atrium hotel, and ours is one of his first, and grandest, examples.

With 35 floors in three shimmering towers, all centered on a seven-story atrium lobby, the hotel evokes the feeling of being in a "city within a city"—and its distinctive, dramatic design has made it a popular setting for many movies and TV series over the years. Johnny Depp's The Nick of Time was filmed almost exclusively at the hotel, and the hotel has also been featured in Mission Impossible III, Hancock, and CSI. In Season 13 of The Bachelor, contestants rode a zip-line from the hotel roof to our glittering outdoor pool.

Following recent wide-ranging renovations, the open, airy structure bearing Portman's innovative imprint remains. His signature floor tiles can be seen in our lobby's Lakeview Bistro as well as on some atrium and meeting floors—and with a lobby he strategically divided into two levels, you'll find an intimate and soothing atmosphere wherever you stop to rest.
