The location and facility entirely met our needs during our stay. The best part of the stay was the daily yoga class held in the mornings.

We have stayed at the Moana 8 times and have never had a bad experience. If you enjoy romantic and historic hotels the Moana is for you.

My fourth stay here, nearly a week using points, and still in my top three hotels worldwide.
I'm mystified that the Starwood branding people have downgraded it to a Westin given its historic standing - and if you have a wooden frame structure as you do in the original building then do you REALLY want to encourage the footsteps of small children racing around being transmitted though every floor/ceiling?
I love the wind wafting off the sea straight through the classic lobby; one step inside and you've left the traffic of Kalakaua Ave a world away.
My single gripe was the "Resort Charge" - that was on the booking confirmation, but which I initially overlooked - of USD 25/day. It gave me a whole page of goodies, not a single one of which I wanted, or needed as a non-family, SPG Gold For Life member. This issue was resolved after a genial chat with the VERY helpful Duty Manager. If it's good financial value for families who are not Gold/Platinum etc. then let them do the numbers and opt-IN, not force those who don't want it to opt-OUT (if they take the time to question it).
We had a SUPERB dinner at the Verandah, though the breakfast is way over-priced.

As a long time SPG member we always expect to be dealt with in a straightforward and polite manner. Upon check in we were given an upgrade to a partial ocean view. The front desk person made it sound like an awesome deal and that he was doing us a big favor. Upon arriving at the room we soon realized that you have to go outside on the balcony and peer over to see anything. We were also given a room right next to the elevators. The room's AC also failed. We finally had to talk the front desk into allowing us to switch rooms at 11 pm. They were reluctant to do so. I finally spoke with the front desk manager the next morning and she admitted that check in personnel will often 'mis-speak' upon check in to make things sound better than they really are knowing they won't have to deal with the customer once they walk away. This is wholly unacceptable and not what customer service and especially Starwood should stand for. In the end we were comped the $31 resort fee- big deal.... Btw, I understand that this resort is on Waikaki Beach, but $34 for a cheap breakfast buffet and $12 for a Mai Tai- it's legal robbery. the property is beautiful, but the staff was misleading and reluctant to help until pushed.

Very disappointed about the front desk, no body take care when I queued up in the Platinum line when check in, 2 Japanese lady staff were busy in chatting with a lady customer, even not try to have eye contact with me, finally check in when they cleared up the normal check in line. More terrible when check out, it's also a Japanese staff stay in the Platinum counter, when I approve she shown me a board to let me know she is work for Japanese group check in, I said "I am a platinum member" and then point at the Gold/Platinum member STAND, she point me to the normal line but I refused to do so and said" I am a Platinum member so this is my line!" She made no response, just walked away and help some Japanese customers queued up in the normal line(not sure a group or not), finally I stand there for 10 minutes, no one help me and I can only went to the nearest staff and said " I'm rush to the airport, have no time to wait, do you have a drop box for express check out?" The male staff said " OK, leave us your room key and we'll do it for you." It's a very simple case but those staffs serve the Platinum counter/Japanese Group check in really made me mad.(it's a false to put them together)
