Rated 5 out of 5 by Westin SF Great location Friendly staff Clean and comfortable April 11, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Lost Reservation I was traveling here for business and was impressed by the location and amenities that this location had to offer. However, I had booked online (with a confirmation number and all) and they had just lost my reservation/ didn't have it at all. I was patient and understanding, but frustrated at the fact that they didn't seem bothered and didn't offer me a discount/upgrade of any sort. I was also double-charged for internet on my final bill. I have stayed at much better Westin locations for service. Disappointing. April 10, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by good view and locations generally it is a hotel with nice view and good location. The staff are helpful and good. But the cleaning lady is always making mistake. When we ask for cleaning, she forget to refill in the bathroom. the days we ask not to clean, she come in again and again. this is annoying. The telephone call is extremely expensive. I called three times short to LA, California and one times to NY. It totally charged me 130 dollers. But in the room phone, I did not see a clean explanation about the rate for calling (only said 110%, that it is..). I found the fee is ridiculously high. And I did not get a good explanation from the check out staff member. April 10, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great location and friendly staff I took a vacation to SF with my family and was very happy with the hotel. Audry at the front desk greeted us when we arrived after a somewhat difficult travel day. Seeing we had two rooms she was good enough to arrange to have both on the same floor. Her sunny disposition was a great start to our stay. Everyone in the hotel was friendly, helpful, and courteous. Housekeeping came early in the day and did a great job with our rooms. April 9, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great elevators and overall experience Thanks for a great stay. The check in gentlman on crutches was professional and attentive. Room was very nice and provided all that was needed. Elevators were extremely responsive with 5-10 seconds! Thanks for a great experience. April 9, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Exceptional personal care The entire staff went beyond excellent to provide an exceptional experience from arrival to departure. The check inn staff spent considerable time with my wife and I finding a room which met all of our personal requirements without any resentment or frustration. During our entire stay we were greeted with a smile and offer of assistance every time we encountered a member of the hotel staff. It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end! I highly recommend the Westin St Francis. April 9, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Small, Outdated, & Dirty I would NOT recommend!! From the $58.00 per NIGHT parking, small, & dirty room, this hotel doesn't ive up to expectations. The tile grout in the bathroom is gross and housekeeping had clearly not cleaned the wet bar area or vacuumed as there were bobby pins and dirt on the floor. GROSS. Not worth the money at all. I feel ripped off! April 8, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great hotel! Everything about the hotel was great! Location is walking distance to many great places. April 8, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not up to Westin standards I travel a lot on business and have had the pleasure of staying at several different Westin locations. I had found staff to be very caring and accomodating. They call to ensure your room is satisfactory or that room sevice was good etc. I have to say I was very disappointed with the service at the St Francis. When I checked in and entered my room I was taken back by the strong smell of cigarette smoke. I had noticed the maid making up the room next to mine when I arrived so I went out and asked her if this was a smoking room/hotel. She indicated it was not and used her radio to alert someone. I waited but no one contacted me. I then asked if I could use her room deodorizer and went back to spray my room. It did little to help so I called the front desk..( I understand it isn't their fault that a prior guest had "broke the rules". But cleaning staff should have flagged this room.) The front desk person informed me she needed to check with management then came back on the line and said she'd send someone to me with keys to another room. The bellboy hastilly showed me to my new room which was adjacent to the elevator shaft .I voiced my displeasure with this location to him but he just ignored me and left . After remaining in the room for a few minutes- I determined the noise from the elevator would be a problem and would keep me up all night. Again, no call from the front desk. so I was forced to call them. I then was moved to another room. At no time after that did anyone from the front desk contact me to inquire as to whether everything was "okay" now or to offer an apology for the inconvenience. No call after I ordered room service and when I checked out- the clerk didn't even ask the standard "how was your stay"? ~ Room for improvement by all staff at this location. The only positive I can say is~ I don't usually use the complimentary toiletries from hotels but I had left my body lotion at home. So I reached for the little bottle of White Tea Aloe lotion on the bathroom counter. Very nice lotion with a fresh clean scent and not too greasy or heavy. The only bright side to my stay at the St Francis. April 8, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Horrible Customer Service even as an SPG Gold Member Upon my arrival on Friday, April 5th I immediately went to the SPG counter to check-in. I asked if my previous request in the system and call to the hotel will be honored of a potential upgrade. The lady behind the counter said no they couldn't do that instantly. No big deal and we carried on our way. As soon as our luggage was brought up to the room by the bellman, he was like wow - this room is unacceptable. Asked what my status was and made a call to the front and told them the situation and moved up to a new room. We didn't receive coffee in our room as most or the rooms indicate, I had trouble accessing the wi-fi and our TV wasn't working. In addition the room smelt and they have to come deodorize it. It seems like I was calling the front for everything from the moment I walked in the hotel. The cake topper of the trip was the chaos in valet, I was told when we called down for them to pull our car up that they couldn't pull it up or our and expected us to wait 15 or more minutes why they get it. One time we told them to leave it out as we will be back in 20 and of course that didn't happen. April 8, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by This hotel has been better in the past. When we walked into the room everything looked fine until we took a closer look. The lounge chair had crumbs on it, the comforter was stained and the lumbar pillow was dirty! We folded the comforter over to avoid the stain and put the lumbar pillow on the floor. Then I ordered lunch through room service, which came within 20 minutes. I ordered a sandwich with fruit, iced tea and a glass of wine. The wine didn't smell or taste right so I called room service to let them know and the person on the phone was questioning me. I thought he handled things poorly. I put the Saran Wrap back on the wine. A rep from room service came to pick up my tray and wine so his manager could taste the wine which I was happy to hear so he/she could taste it for themselves. The wine was credited from our bill. All in all our stay was fine. Hopefully the next time we come the room will be cleaner. April 8, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Great location but disappointing service Great location but the service leaves much to be desired. Oak room service staff and servers are HORRIBLE! Wish the service and staff matched the location of the hotel. SPG benefits werent even mentioned at check in or offered. April 8, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by The worst SPG hotel in the city. I have stayed in all the first rate SPG hotels in San Francisco. This is the worst. The elevators often are shut down. The parking is expensive. The rooms are small and worn out. There are hookers within 10 feet of the front door at all hours of the day. The level of service is generally poor. I did not feel safe. April 7, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great location and staff Great location on Union Square but can be noisy. Rooms in the older part of the hotel are small but well maintained. April 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great location and service Excellent choice for our family for our visit to SF. Clean room and helpful staff. Top shelf concierge service. April 7, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Check-in When I arrived, 8:00 PM there was one Agent behind the Desk. 3 guests in the Premier Line and 3 guests in the regular line. I waited over 15 minutes to check in. There was no call for assistance. Agents from the back were very slow to come out. This is the second time I have been dissatisfied checking into the St. Francis Hotel. William H Devine April 6, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Nothing was right My "Family" size room was not up to date. Old and dirty furniture, faucets that turned in the opposite direction and a TV that was too small. The room was not ready on time and the "free" Internet did not work. All in all a very bad experience for this frequent traveler. April 6, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Needs improvement After leaving the hotel, my checkout receipt didn't match my room charges. A simple request to send an updated copy of my receipt has taken forever. Customer service was extremely unhelpful. April 5, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Step back in time with today's amenities From the elegant architecture to the historic photographs and furnishings, guests feel wrapped in the early 1900s without missing the comforts and conveniences of today. Sink into a leather chair in the lobby coffee/wine bar and lose yourself people watching or reading a book. Rest well in the famed Heavenly Bed and be invigorated by the rain shower in the room. Start or end your day in the fitness center which offers state of the art equipment and immaculate and peaceful locker rooms. These are just a few reasons this hotel thrives throughout San Francisco's history. April 3, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Staff As a frequent business traveler to SF I often have to stay at this Westin when one of my first choices is booked. Normally I prefer to stay away from the touristy areas such as Union Square due to the noise and crowds. When I checked in I was given a room overlooking Union Square. Great view but was too close to 2 painful noises. (1) Jack Hammering on the street at 9:00 p.m. and (2) Street musicians who sound great unless you're trying to work in your room and get some sleep. Amanda at the front desk was incredible and kindly found me another room on a higher floor to alleviate some of the noise outside and did so with a smile. I truly hope this hotel works to get the noise at night stifled a bit. April 2, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Good Location but Aging Systems The good: This hotel's location can't be beat if you want to stay in the middle of it all in downtown SF. Right on Union Square & steps from shopping, dining, public transport, etc. Although, I must say that getting to the hotel driveway was a bit of a chore due to the throngs of people walking up and down Powell St. (only a factor if you're driving). Staying at a hotel a block away from Union Square would have also been quite convenient and easier to get in and out of... The valet service is great and their folks retrieved my car within a few minutes every time. The Cafe in the lobby is also staffed by gracious and helpful staff members. The bad: This hotel's mechanical & plumbing systems seem to be in need of a major upgrade. The room we stayed two nights in was on the 11th floor and the biggest annoyance was the HVAC system. It came on just fine but 15 seconds before it stopped, there was a loud bang, like the slamming of a door. Then the thermostat would open to stop the fan and...silence. This pattern repeated all night as the unit cycled on and off. At first I didn't know what was causing the periodic bangs but eventually figured it out as I had a few sleepless hours to kill! Had a terrible experience sleeping and I let the front desk know about the issue at checkout so hopefully the next occupant won't suffer the same fate. Also minor gripes about the sink faucets which had to be precisely calibrated so that the water wasn't either scalding hot or too cold and the bathtub diverter which let the faucet leak during shower operation. Finally, my kids found an empty can of chewing tobacco left behind by a previous occupant somewhere in the room right after we checked-in. Would've expected a bit more thorough cleaning effort at the end of a guest's stay. It's really a shame that they have these issues since the property is quite grand and the staff I interacted with was very courteous. April 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Hotel Amazing building, location and view on Union Square. Very helpful and friendly staff. Westin St Francis also communicates over Twitter and answered my questions anywhere, anytime. Westin St Francis feels like home and even better. And I will certainly stay here next year again. Only the walls were very thin and I heard my neighbors, just as they heard me; and there is no pool. April 2, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by A good experience if your a tourist, memorable location and architecture. The architecture and location are the major plus. The poor sound isolation room to room in the old part of the hotel where I stayed was a distinct negative. The room whilst not huge was perfectly adequate, I liked the high ceiling, as it lent a sense of spaciousness that without it would probably make me feel a little claustrophobic, given I was out and about most of the time, I was comfortable. The bed was comfy and the room cleanliness acceptable. The hallway on the 3rd floor, had a constant odour, not a specific one, that was a little off putting. For me as a business user, the pathetic, low bandwidth, and outrageously expensive internet was inadequate. My only interaction with staff was at check in, where I led the, polite and obviously trying their best, equally obviously under qualifed/ trained employee politely through the spelling of every aspect of my registration. Rated 1 out of 5 by needs some improvement paper thin walls and maids standing in the hall talking in loud voices at 7 am everyday not very relaxing on a weekend April 2, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Room not in line with the Westin brand Old towels feeling like sandpaper Room very with chipping paint, shower was not working properly. Long waits for elevators Breakfast overpriced vs menu April 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by This hotel was perfect The location is the best. The staff were wonderful. Everyone went out of their way to help. This is how a hotel should be operated. We felt very comfortable there. April 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great location, quaint and lovely room The Westin is a great location in Union Square. It is right in the center of a great deal of activity. The hotel is classic and well kept. The staff were , overall, very welcoming and helpful. April 1, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Customer service needs improvement I was very excited to come to the hotel that I spent my senior prom many...many years ago. Check in was a bit challengingt as we asked for ajoining rooms and did not get our request. The person that assisted us was very accomodating and professional. I don't remember her name but she was worked in the back office. She was very respectful, understanding and helpful. We attended my niece's wedding that was beautiful. We sat in the "Financial District" table and the waiters were awful. They continually bumped our chairs as they walked by and waited on us. They literally placed the food on the table as if they were in a race. Table was set with three additional name tags that would not accomodate seating. We were having to play who gets to sit.. Waiters told us to talk to the lead waitress who told us "what do you want me to do about it". REALLY? She finally found three seats elsewhere. I am making these statement only to help you improve your staff's customer service. April 1, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Expected More Housekeeping never cleaned the room on our first day of our 4 night stay. And even after we called, no one came. We had to request additional towels, toilet paper, lotion, coffee and tea and had to call 3 times before they were delivered! Called daily after that to make sure room was cleaned. Room service for breakfast overpriced and didn't bring receipts for food orders. Water pressure in shower was poor. Toilet was institutional looking and didn't completely flush contents. Room was dusty upon arrival and throughout stay. Couch has stain on arm. April 1, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Noise annoyance in the evening While I generally enjoyed my stay at the hotel (and I appreciated the spacious room I had facing directly the American flag), I was annoyed for three consecutive evenings (3/27, 3/28, 3/29) by the amplified heavy metal music played near the hotel from 6 pm to 10 pm. I came to San Francisco from upstate New York. Due to the time difference, I went to bed at 8 pm (11 pm Eastern Time) and it was hard for me to sleep when heavy metal music was being played in the background. I did ask for a change of the room and a pair of ear plug. But my stay would have been more enjoyable if somehow the hotel could do something about the medal music. For the record, the music did not come from Union Square as the receptionist told me. It came from somewhere in or near the hotel, and I suspected it came from one of the bars in the hotel. Please investigate the source of the noise. April 1, 2013
