Rated 4 out of 5 by Artemis Green approach
I am a proponent of the going Green approach but it might have gone too far during my recent stay. My understanding was that I could opt out of having the towels and sheets replaced on a daily basis, which is acceptable. However, I did not get any service at all - not making the bed, tidying the room or emptying the garbage can. In my opinion, this is not "going green", it's not having the basic hotel service.
On the other hand, I like the new feature of having the option to "borrow" workout gear whenever I have forgotten mine.

Rated 3 out of 5 by bpatel48 The elevator lock needs to be replaced with the one that works.
I've been staying at the Westin as it is convenient for work. However, I've been issued a room at a check-in that still needed to be cleaned, multiple incidents about the room key not working for the elevator lock and the bus boy having issues giving me a water bottle, although i did explain to him that I am using the GreenChoice, therefor I do not get water bottles in my room (he gave me a lecture on calling room service at that point). Breakfast staff on the other hand goes above and beyond to please everyone. If they fix the issues concerning their elevator, bus boys and housekeeping staff, they'll have no trouble bumping up their starwood status to category 3.

The rooms are big and nice. During my last stay we weren't that satisfied with the cleaning of the rooms.

Rated 3 out of 5 by TJ66 Not up to Westin Standards
This was my first time staying at this Westin although I stay at Westin properties across the country monthly. I was given a handicap room as they said they were sold out. I asked for different room but again told that I it was sold out. My room had an old plastic shower head that was loosely connected and sprayed all over the bathroom when I turned it on. Not the heavenly shower that I'm used to. The TV remote did not work either but I figured it just needed new batteries. I made mention when I checked out and I was told they would give me 1,000 Starwood points. Not the experience I would expect from this property.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JerryS0327 Positives and negatives
Positives: very polite staff, from front desk to restaurant staff. Food quality very good. Fast service, a big plus for business travelers.
Negatives: Fitness center does not open until 6:30 AM - is not staffed so should be open 24 hrs like many hotels; no shampoo in room; TV was not working (found it unplugged); no coffee cups for in-room coffee maker. A bit expensive rate for metro Detroit.

When we called to make reservations we told the person on the phone that we didn't have a credit card to put the room on...that we would be paying in cash. We were told that would not be a problem.
When we arived we were exhausted after a very long day and came to check in. The clerk at the desk would not take cash to check in. We were told we had to drive to Meijer and get one of those visa cards so that they could put the 20% on it before we could check in. We left...frustrated drove several miles to Meijer bought a $100. visa card that cost us another $5.95 so that we could check in.
When we got back to the hotel there was a diffferent clerk at the desk and they said that we have to put all of the room and the extra 20% on the visa...we that didn't work because we were staying 2 nights and we only bought a $100. visa. She did finally except the cash...that we paid for both night in advance...plus the 20% incidental charge that was put on this visa... sooo we were frustrated and exhausted.. Aside for all of this...our stay was very nice. I was very shocked that a visa was more excepted then cash.

Rated 3 out of 5 by DWALDO3156 Service Needs Improving
I travel extensively and was excited about checking out the Westin Southfield. Unfortunately poor service diminshed the experience. The service at check-in was very weak, the restaurant was grossly understaffed, and the printer wasnt working in the Business Services room. Nice rooms but service was poor. Not what I'd expect from a Westin property.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Leroy1 Uneven
The first night we had a room that was not satisfactory, a kind of fold up Murphy bed. the main problem was that the room was not well insulated and we had loud noise from visitors in rooms on both sides of us.
We switched rooms to a King on the 12th floor. It was excellent, quiet and a large and comfortable bed. So we really enjoyed that aspect of our stay.
However, in both rooms the housekeeping was uneven, water not replaced, etc.
Staff generally was uneven, some people very friendly and helpful; others quite clueless.
Food was not very good. We had a really horrible continental breakfast brought by room service, some mushy donuts, etc. and wrong kind of coffee, which then was replaced, by decaf, but charged us a second time for the service.
Breakfast in the restaurant was not very good either.
Dinner in the restaurant was average. Our waiter was actually charming, in a kind of gruff way.
I enjoyed the lap pool. Good for one person. Water really too warm, but got better on the third day.
Our room keys did not work half the time. We kept changing them for new ones.
My husband thought on the weekend nights the hotel appeared to be turning into a bordello. Not that we cared, just the noise..

Rated 4 out of 5 by bluegrass Service disappointed
Comng to the North American International Auto Show for years we have sometimes stayed downtown and sometimes here. This hotel offers good value. Our long term experience with this hotel is probably one of the main influences in our family's preference for Starwood brand.
The staff in the bar and in the restaurant (both) seemed indifferent this visit. I would really appreciate having the Wall Street Journal available on Saturdays even if I have to pay for it. I was surprised that staff did not try to locate where I could buy one.

We have stayed here before and loved it so we decided to come back to celebrate our anniversary.Unfortunately,we didnt have the same experience. My disappointment isnt the bad experience in our room but more the way the staff handled it. I told the front desk about the problems when I checked out and she didnt seem to care. I also sent an email to the hotel regarding my stay and never got a response back. Almost makes you feel like they dont apprecialte their guests.

Rated 3 out of 5 by anderstud34 Nice Hotel, Room was dirty
My wife and I stayed here July 13 after a day of shopping in the area. We've stayed at many Westin hotels in the past so we knew we would be comfortable and enjoy the stay.
The only complaint we had was there were some loose hairs in the bed sheets, sink and around the toilet. We were to tired to have room service come to our room so we ended up sleeping on top of the bed sheet (which was hair free).
Other than that great location.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Michelle6 Hotel is sub par for a Westin
This Westin is not up to par. Slow response time to requests - room service, calls to front desk regarding issues, etc. I've been staying here 3 nights a week for the past 12 weeks and inevitably ABC (the TV station) does not work in my hotel room - the front desk always seems surprised by this complaint. Internet is extremely slow depending on what room you are in. Typically, only 1 of the 4 elevators is in operation and wait time is excessive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by iistmwt Great Hotel, Bad Wi-Fi
I've stayed in this hotel three times and each time I have enjoyed my stay. The beds are comfortable, the staff is friendly, service is quick, and the rooms are clean. However, the internet connection is extremely spotty and is very frustrating to simple tasks such as send email. I have an ethernet cord handy so I plugged it into the router in the room, and there is no improvement whatsoever. Aside from the wireless it's a comfortable hotel.

I spent a week on business at this hotel and everything was more than expected. I would like to give a big thanks to Carolyn in Tango's for her outstanding service and wonderful friendliness. Carolyn served my breakfast every morning and she was a bright start to my day. Thanks Carolyn for your smile and friendly conversation!

The Westin Southfield is one of my favorite hotels so I decided to take my fiance' for an overnight getaway for his birthday. The staff here is awesome! I ordered champagne and strawberries to be delivered prior to arrival to celebrate and to my surprise we were upgraded to the Corner Suite! The Corner Suite is now my favorite room in the hotel. The pool and whirlpool area was very relaxing. See you soon Westin Southfield!

The hotel itself needs to be updated but the friendly staff make it worth the stay. Specifically, the wait staff in Tangos for breakfast, Joy, Carolyn, Phil, and Andrea, are always helpful and pleasant.

My room looked like it hadn't been cleaned when I first arrived. I asked the front desk to have it cleaned again, but House keeping still left the room well below typical SPG standards. House Keeping also smoked in the stairwell near my room and the smell would filter through the hallways

I had an amazing experience my first week. Second week not so much. I got a subpar room. The food at the restaurant is also extremely salty. A few tweaks here and there and this Westin will be in par with my other Westin experience.

Rated 2 out of 5 by HereEachWeek overall: consistently inconsistent maint. & room setup. BUT: great staff.
I stay here each week for business travel. For half of each week, this is where i live. The primary driver for continuing to stay here is the location to the project site, otherwise, I'd probably stay elsewhere. Before going further though, lest this point be lost in what follows, I have to say the staff is excellent - very courteous and helpful.
Overall, it seems the focus is on superficial "glitz" like:
1. fancy lobby
2. some sort of "green" efforts
3. fancy bed linens
4. two-headed showers
5. staff livery
but they regularly fall short on what I consider basics like:
1. setting up the rooms consistently, particularly coffee service
2. Maintenance: electrical outlets, internet connectivity, drawers, shower, coffee pot
- food is very good, and there are some very nice entrees on the menu, but compared to a competing hotel down the road, the menu is limited and expensive. I liked the other hotel's food just as well. Personally, I would very much like to see more basic or simple entrees added. Right now, there's only one such choice -- a (really good) bacon cheeseburger; everything else is more "high-end". I'm on business travel -- I don't want to have to blow my entire perdiem on one meal.
