Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing customer service We came to Calgary to meet with a client and for our daughter to dance up there as well. We decided to bring the whole family with us to enjoy the city. The customer service at this hotel one some of the best that I have ever seen. One of our kids took a spill in our room tripping over his own blanket while trying to get closer to his brother playing a video game and we needed to go to the emergency room. Not being from Canada we were unsure of what to do or where to go. The hotel staff was amazing giving us vouchers back and forth to the ER. Getting our son cleaned up before we went and putting a bandage over his eye. They sent cookies and apple juice up the room for the kids. Everyone in the font lobby knew our little boys name and were just amazing. We will definitely be staying here next year when we come back to Calgary. The kids loved the food from room service and the Keg is connected to the hotel which was excellent as well. The breakfast buffet was good and had plenty of options. Our room was great and very spacious. We had a junior suite with balcony. My husband loved the TV in the mirror in the bathroom. Thank you to everyone at the hotel who made this stay wonderful! Even with a trip to the ER. November 8, 2012

Rated 2 out of 5 by Disappointed I was staying with a friend and had reserved a suite with a balcony and two double beds. I had requested a south or west facing balcony with the hope that we could enjoy the evening sun. When we checked in at 4:30, we were told that no suites with double beds were available. When we were unwilling to accept a double bed suite without a balcony or a balcony suite with a king bed, we were told if we waited an hour, a double bed balcony suite would be available, but it was north facing. Fine. Although the suite was spacious and the beds were comfortable, the balcony was very noisy, due to constant noise from the building's HVAC (I think). There was also no furniture whatsoever on the balcony, so we had to lift and drag the only two chairs in the room (desk chair and large sitting area chair) back and forth off the balcony. We would have expected at the very least that the balcony would have had a couple of plastic chairs and a little plastic table. The room also seemed to be missing some furniture (no coffee table in the sitting area, etc.) All of this made us wonder if perhaps we had been given a room that was not normally used. Disappointing given the price we paid for a high-end hotel. Service was prompt but very expensive. June 26, 2012

Rated 2 out of 5 by Challenges in main tower This week i was provided a room in the main tower. Matress was terrible and sagged to the center. shower tempature was hot/cold as well. Gym continues to be a challenge from both adequate facility for a hotel this size as well as cleanliness and maintnance. TV was not working in some of the cardio machines. some not working at all. guests were disregarding the 30 mnute rule and when reported to front desk, little was done initially. later, after a few calls, security came up and jsut walked the site. didnt address any people with over 30 minites on machines, so no real action. Even dumbell weights are not maintained and need to have bolts tightened before someone gets hurt. Also, this week, one of the benches was removed and made the weight room een more inadequate. one gues even brought in a chair from the pool to excercise with as he was getting desperate to get a true workout in. Essence resteraunt needs work. some folks are very good such as Jill, for sure. but at the front, however, front reception desck personel have been repeatedly late for the 6:30 open and insists on escourting guests one by one even when the entry line is down the stairs at about 7 each day. she either needs help from the manager or needs to adopt a more efficient approach. folks are in a hurry in the morning and need faster seating and service. Rated 4 out of 5 by Essence dining room needs improvement and staff need training Looking for a quick coffee and a muffin before a meeting this morning. Starbucks onsite had a lineup a mile long. Made the mistake of going to the Essence dining room without asking to see the menu first. Waiter poured coffee and orange juice and asked if we would be using the serve-yourself buffet. When we responded that we just wanted a muffin he explained that the coffee and juice were already $11 per person and that if we wanted any food we might as well get the $26 buffet because it was the best deal. When we asked if he was kidding about the $11 for a coffee and juice, he said, "This is the Westin," as if that was sufficient license to gouge anyone dumb enough to enter the restaurant. We didn't have time for the buffet so we said we would just have a muffin and he said he would not charge us for that if that's all we were having. How generous of him. In the end, when we went to pay the bill he was nowhere to be found. The cashier had to track him down to get our bill. He had included muffins on the bill at $3 each--maybe he was annoyed with us for not having the full buffet?? I charged the entire $29.40 for the two of us to my room and then asked for a receipt for my own records. The cashier could not provide that herself (???) and was about to leave to get the waiter to get me a copy of the bill. I said we were in a hurry and her response was, "Our servers are also busy," as if my time was not as valuable as theirs. I told her to forget it, and we left without a receipt... disappointed. Despite the satisfactory experience elsewhere at the hotel, this unsatisfactory experience at the Essence and the cavalier approach to customer service by these two staff members is enough to make me want to take my business to another Calgary hotel. Rated 3 out of 5 by Great Hotel in Calgary We stayed here earlier this month and had a good overall experience. The staff was very friendly at check-in and gave us an upgraded room in the business tower. The first thing I noticed when we got off the elevator on our floor is that the hallway was very dim! It was a little scary. Once we got to our room, we were pleased with the extra space, and all the furniture was very comfortable (as usual at Westins). The second problem we had was when we went to use the bathroom after settling in, we noticed that the toilet was dirty. It wasn't that the toilet bowl was stained from age, but there actually were dirty specs in the bowl that looked like they would easily come off with a scrubber (we have pictures). At this point, we were too tired to go ask for a room change, so we just used it anyway. It was pretty gross. Other than that, the bathroom was much roomier than a standard room which was very nice. There was significantly more counter space than the standard room and the shower was larger as well. Our room came with one free breakfast at the restaurant in the lobby, but since we had 2 people, we asked the waiter at the restaurant if we could use it on something else. He told me it was equivalent to a $25 credit on dining, so I could get room service or grab something at Starbucks. I chose to go to Starbucks, and charged the bill to my room. At checkout, the charge showed up on my bill, but I explained the situation to the staff and they were very accommodating and removed the charge from my bill, informing me that the credit really is only supposed to be used at the restaurant for breakfast. Other notes: internet was free and pretty fast parking could be more reasonably priced August 21, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Extremely Disappointed My fiancé and I stayed here from October 12-14, 2013. The Westin has always been our go to hotel, no matter where we go, so we were expecting the same great service we normally receive. Unfortunately, however, this was not the case at all. Upon arrival we waited over half an hour to even be able to check in. The line was so long we were basically waiting outside in the cold. Once we got to the front there wasn’t even an apology about the delay. Then we were told that our room had been “upgraded” to the business tower. When I booked the hotel I had specifically asked to NOT be put there because, from previous experience, I knew that meant we got moved to the older tower and we already knew our friends were staying in the other one. We got placed there anyway. The only real perk of being in the business tower was the free Wifi, which didn’t work. We called the front desk twice about it and eventually just gave up trying to connect. We also noticed right away that the ice machine on our floor was broken. We called the front desk again and they ensured us someone would be up right away with ice. No one ever came so eventually I just went to different floors to get it myself. It was also very warm in our room so we turned on the air conditioning. That was apparently broken as well. So for the fourth time I called the front desk. This time they did at least send someone to our room (the next day). They fiddled with it for a bit, then told us it was fixed and left. It still wasn’t working though when we went to use it. We slept terribly both nights we were there because, despite the bed being extremely comfortable, we had zero control over the temperature in our room. When we finally went to check out, I told the front desk that we’ve always been big fans of Westin hotels, but explained our issues during this stay. Their only response was to give us free parking. At this point I was insulted because I had booked a “park and stay” package which included the cost of parking in it, yet they charged us anyway. So our “compensation” for how we were treated was not being charged for something we weren’t even supposed to be charged for? Both my fiancé and I felt completely insignificant to the hotel and staff. We have stayed there several times yet it seemed regardless of how many things went wrong for us, all they cared about was getting us in and out. I am thoroughly disappointed in the way we were treated and how substandard our stay was. October 15, 2013
