Rated 4 out of 5 by Great location I visit Halifax several times a year and this is my hotel of choice. The location is great with the Saturday farmers market a short walk and the harbour boardwalk close by. The car park facilities (self park) is very convenient and easy to access. The rooms are very comfortable with great views of the harbour. The bathrooms are a bit on the small size but it is an older hotel. Daily newspapers are not delivered to the room by default. You have to remember to ask at check-in for this. Staff are always great. July 13, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by The Hotel is not up to the Westin Standards Check in: Arrived at 3:30 pm; the room assigned for me was not ready; Michael asked me to wait for 20 - 30 min as there was no other room available; Checked in 10 min later with another F/D agent who assigned another room for us to avoid further waiting; Room: Checked in in room 612 - very dusty and dated; the bedding was missing the feather blankets; there was only duvet and a sheet underneath; bathroom vent was very dirty; window was opened and couldn't close all the way. Parking accessibility: had to park the car on the parking lot at the back of the hotel prior to check in; bellman explained that a key is not needed to park the car, which was incorrect. No one has explained either that a key is needed to leave the parking lot at check out. July 11, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Stay Thank you for a wonderful stay at the Westin Halifax! We have stayed there numerous times already this year and were very surprised and happy to be given the Crown room for the night. Upon arrival at the hotel, the valet greeted us by name which really impressed me as it had been a few months since we had been to the hotel. The staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome, thank you very much! July 13, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Had a good time but was over charged for use of mini bar I was over charged for mini bar after check out. I requested an adjustment to final bill. Am waiting for response. July 9, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice hotel, great staff, thin walls Great location, beautiful old building but renovated to be quite comfortable. Unfortunately the walls between the rooms are thin and we have noisy neighbours returning to their room at 3 am which ruined what otherwise would have been a great sleep. July 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by pleasant stay Friendly and helpfull staff, close to everything, clean and comfortable room, small park and cityscape offers nice view even if not harbourside. July 9, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Under invested in hotel! I was very surprised by the limited level of investment that has been put into the hotel in recent years. It was obvious from the age of many of the fixtures, fittings and general upkeep of the hotel that not much has been done to keep the hotel modern, and generally up to a standard that I would expect from a Westin. I have stayed in many Westin hotels around the world and I can say with certainty that the Westin Nova Scotian was the most 'tired' of them all by some margin. Of particular note was the air conditioning system in the room which was very archaic and required written instructions on the wall to work it. Also of note were the elevators which were clearly very old. Overall we were disappointed and would not stay there again. July 2, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Hotel Experience The staff is wonderful. Rooms are clean and comfortable and most have wonderful views of either the park or the harbor. Food is excellent in hotel restaurant, but the hotel is a great place to stay to see all the attractions of Halifax. July 7, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Undermining The Westin Brand (1) My room had a funky smell, probably from the carpet. I kept windows open but the smell would not dissipate. I (2) The noise level is high. I had a nice corner room and yet I could hear gusts in the adjacent room. Not very restful. (3) Breakfast – awful. The Elements restaurant is depressing and the food is horrible. I was shocked to discover that skim milk, which I poured in to my coffee, has gone bad. It's really unpleasant to see curled milk in your morning coffee. (4) The staff is helpful but there is no way that they can make it up for the lack of proper management. June 28, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Survey Response The lobby and check-in area was beautiful but that is where the beauty ended. The rooms are long and narrow and not very spacious. The bathrooms were particularly small. The window is divided into three smaller panes. One pane was continually fogged over and the other two were being dripped on from the air conditioner up above. So not a great view of the harbour. Our air conditioner did not work properly so the room was around 78 degrees according to the thermometer on the wall. A majority of the TV channels were fuzzy or had no signal at all. Also we could hear the elevator move up and down from our room. Granted the noise would eventually die down as it grew later in the evening but then would start up again early in the morning. We also could not understand the $20.00 per day parking fee when the parking lot was directly behind the hotel? We had heard so much about the Westin and were excited to stay there but we were very disappointed. The location was excellent but I am sorry to say that I would not recommend your hotel to anyone. Rated 2 out of 5 by Poor Experience We stay at the Westin in Halifax often. I must say that we were disappointed this time. Staff at door were wonderful...helpful and friendly. Our room service breakfast was not good. My husband got the wrong order. My juice order was incorrect. The bacon which I ordered crisp was not cooked and toast was soggy. Morning buffet was good. Girl waiting on us was indifferent. /coffee was cold and we had to ask for a refill. Not pleased with overall experience. July 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by First time experience As I like the waterfront area in Halifax, my previous stays had been at other hotels. I noticed the Westin property and decided to give it a try - the reception staff were excellent and assigned a very nice corner room with a great view of the harbour. My visit was short but I would have liked to experience more of the amenities offered, so until next time! July 3, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Lamontagne On Internet site of Westin the price was 119$ for 1 night CAA member and the front deck did not recpect these price. When I leave you charge me 189$. I show you the price on my IPhone and the manager told me that can he can do nothing. I explain to to the manager that it not only for money, I am feeling like someboby stoll me. He leave me like that July 3, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Very disappointed Arrived at the Hotel at 4:20 pm and my room was not ready which I did not appreciate. Finally I was given a lovely room however it was tired and had a serious issue. When I ran my bath the entire faucet fell off and water spurted everywhere...what a mess. I ordered breakfast the next morning and it was very poor. Two overcooked poached eggs, toast with no butter, jam, NOTHING on the tray other than my plate, napkin, and cultery. An expensive meal that was very poor...undercooked bacon and greasey potatoes. The whole experience was underwhelming for a Starwood property. June 25, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Hotel Staff Staff provided excellent and very friendly service throughout the stay. June 26, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by We had a great stay We were there for a conference. Everything was great - from the facilities to the staff. June 26, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by One of the best Starwood properties we stayed at This Westin is located in a great area of Halifax, easily walking to all the sites you would like to visit and great dining at their doorstep. Our room was spacious with a nice view. The staff at this hotel is what really makes it stand out, very customer service oriented throughout the hotel to the Manager, car valet and waitress in the restaurant, a great team. Highly recommend staying here if you are visiting Halifax June 21, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lovely Hotel It's been 30 years since I've stayed at this hotel. I enjoyed returning to something so familiar. Enjoyable as I remembered. Also, the close proximity to Pier 21 is to be noted. This was a romantic get away and everything was perfect. June 23, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice Hotel, Old Building limits experience The hotel was a very old building. The size of the rooms was the biggest downfall. I had a nice view of the Harbor, but only had one tiny window that tilted back so couldn't enjoy the smells and fresh air. The bathroom was very small. It was hard to step into the room and close the door, you kind of had to back yourself in a corner by the toilet. The beds were very comfortable, I got a great night's rest and the television was satisfactory. There was a nice work desk with set up for laptop so that was good. The resteraunt/bar downstairs was very nice. Ate there one night and had an excellent meal, the waitstaff was very accomodating and friendly. The location was great, but bathroom size and old tub/shower could use updating. June 13, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great....Other than the coffee I stay here several times a year and the hotel, the staff, and my room are always good. This trip involved use of a conference room for two days of meetings. The Starbucks coffee in the room was an undrinkable swill. I left the hotel to get coffee elsewhere. If your'e not going to get rid of the Starbucks, at least find an alternative for people who like their coffee made from beans that have been roasted and not burned! June 20, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Old, outdated and substandard As compared to other hotels in Halifax this would be my last choice. Its old, outdated and substandard as compared to other hotels available. Also, given the rates this hotel should be much better. The room was not very clean, garbage was left from previous guest, the coffee maker still had an old used filter pack in it, and don't they ever dust the furniture/lamps etc? Also the "Heavenly" beds were not so heavenly after all. I will not be staying here again, I only did so this time because it was convenient to my needs at that time. September 8, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Generally a nice stay I enjoyed most things about this hotel stay. The location is great, easy to walk around Halifax, and there is even a grocery store right next door. The staff is friendly, the valet parking was good and quick. The restaurant was also good. The only real complaint I have is I paid for a harbour-view upgrade, and I did get a nice room, but the window seals were broken and the condensation inside the windows ruined the harbour view. The upgrade was probably worth it just for the room itself, but it is touted as a harbour view upgrade, without a real harbour view. If it wasn't for that issue, I would have rated the hotel a 5 star. June 23, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Bad service I was terribly disapointed in the service provided by in-room dining... I ordered a meal with a glass of wine. The waiter showed up with my meal and a BOTTLE of wine. I informed him I only needed a glass of wine and not a bottle. He said we would return with a glass of wine. 30 minutes later he had not been back. So I called room service express to follow up and express my disapointement and cancel the wine (I was done my meal and did not want it anymore). The room service manager said: 'Why didn't you keep the bottle?' So it's my fault you screwed up my order? Plus I was being honest in returning the wine. This is not the kinfd of reponse I expect from a Westin employee. Another 30 minutes later the waiter showed up with a glass of wine -- the message had not been given to him. Clearly the in room dining Manager needs to step up his game and service. Other feedback: Mini bar was not refilled and the wine glasses were extremely dirty. Not what I expect when I pay 209$ a night for 3 nights. June 18, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Worst brand promise in the Westin brand No recognition to Platinum members on arrival Room was very hot, mising shampoo, laundry bag Exercise room very hot. Felt like a sauna Restaurant service poor Rooms are old and poorly kept. Sink was clogged. Overall, the worst Westin I ever stayed . Poor brand experience. April 3, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by compensation for broken tv The room was comfortable and clean. When I arrived after check in, a technician was working on the television and was surprised I had been sold the room. It could not be fixed and we were given a complimentary buffet breakfast in exchange. While the breakfast was nice (highly recommend the waffles and Jose's service was stellar), it would have been "the extra mile" to have breakfast for each day we went without the tv. June 9, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Always a comfortable stay Whenever I am in halifax I always try and stay here. Staff is excellent, beds are very comfortable and love being walking distance to the harbour. June 13, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Another great stay. I have been a guest of this hotel on and off for more than 10 years, and I believe it is continually improving. In particular, the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. On the downside, the challenges of maintaining / refreshing old infrastructure are ongoing. The windows, as someone else mentioned, need work so that you can actually enjoy those harbour views. Also, on this visit, I noticed there was no way to turn off the ventilation system in my room. The fan made quite a lot of noise even on its lowest setting, and changing the temperature setting had no effect either. June 30, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Above and Beyone I have significant chemical/scent sensitivities and Sarah, Executive Director of Housekeeping and Alan, Manager of Front Desk communicated with me to ensure they understood my needs, carried out those preparations and blocked off a room to ensure I could enter my room upon arrival. They met me in person to inquire if all was satisfactory and stayed in contact throughout my stay. I have never had my health issue taken so seriously and acted upon with such care and attention from senior and floor staff. I cannot say enough or offer a more heartfelt thank you to all at the Westin Nova Scotian. I had lost faith that I could continue to travel to much valued professional conferences related to other hotels' lack of follow through on promised attention to my health needs - the staff at the Westin Nova Scotian have restored my faith that I can always attend any conference at this hotel.
