Rated 4 out of 5 by A Nice Hotel I have stayed in this hotel several times. It has always been a very pleasant experience: good facility, very clean room, non-smoking hotel, and very friendly staff. The last stay, however, was somewhat different. When I checked in, the front desk put me in the 15th floor, which is the club floor. Nice. When I got into my room, I found a fruit plate, a bottle of high-end mineral water, and a welcome card. Wonderful. Very soon, I found that the name on the card was not mine. The setup was for someone else. I understood that they might be too busy and I did not mind the mess-up. So I called the front desk and had them send the gift to the person who should have received it. The staff was nice to leave the bottle of water for me. When I went to bed, I started to notice a humming noise from outside, most likely the rooftop. It became very perceivable in the night time when everything else quiet down. The noise appeared also on the second and third nights while I stayed there. This is something I have never experienced before while staying in this hotel. The hotel had a swimming pool and I used it for all three nights. There was too much chlorine in the pool. By the end of the third swim, my skin became very very dry and itchy, even though I took a thorough shower after the swim. Despite the minor inconvenience, it is a very nice hotel. I think I will stay there next time, but probably not on the club floor. January 5, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by A lot of money for very little "extras" Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a conference for work. Was guaranteed a King room, got a double. Restaurant was overpriced with very little selection. Gift shop listed as open 24/7, but does not actually exist. You could call the front desk for a candy bar or soda, but that was about it. Room temperature was unbelievably cold during the day and sweltering at night. Despite a call to maintenance, a filter change, and a lot of "talking up" the room & hotel, the temp never changed. On the list of available amenities "should you have forgotten anything" was a fan. The hotel only had 1 and it was "checked out". Made me wonder what else was on the list but unavailable. Bathrobe provided was a size small - would not even close. Bathroom floor was so dirty, I wore my slippers the entire time. Only down pillows available - way too soft to sleep on. Closet doors and drawers stick. Checkout was noon, but housekeeping came by no less than 5 times between 9 and noon to ask if I was checking out. Concierge was AWOL when I got to the lobby so I wrestled my own luggage through the heavy door that was also minus the doorman. Despite them charging a corporate card called in by my office, my personal card is still pending the entire charge for the stay 2 days later. I know it's "just" pending, but it reduces the available balance nevertheless. I've stayed at better one & two star hotels for a lot less! I'm NOT impressed with the Westin. August 17, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Strange customer service Overall the stay was fine. The Valet parking attendants need improvement with their customer service. I was offended that the valet went to point out every scratch on my care before pulling away. As if he assumed that I would then try to blame them on the hotel when they returned my car. I've never had that happen to me before when using valet service. Also the room I was given was right next to the elevator on a Saturday evening so in the wee hours of the morning I heard all the commotion of guests going back to their rooms after a night out. While I could have gone down to switch rooms, it was too late in the night to deal with the hassle. I wish they would have mentioned this at the front desk and asked if the accommodation was okay - which is a service I have received at other hotels. When I went to check out I was not asked how my stay was, but asked if the room was vacant. Which I thought was a strange question given I had my bag with me. Then again with the valet attendants. I handed him my ticket and he looked at me and look at the ticket a few times, in confusion, and then asked if it was for my car. Which I am not sure what else it would be for. He told me it was parked outside the doors, which was great since I called ahead. Didn't give me my key, so I assumed it was in the ignition. In fact my car was locked and another attendant came out to actually give me my key. Did not help me with my bag. Did not get the door for me. Overall all a bad nights sleep and strange service. Oh, the salad I ordered for room service was very good! March 25, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by No communication When we checked in to our room we noticed it was located right above the intersection of a very busy street and could hear the street noise. Staff graciously moved us across the hall, though we had to give up our king for 2 double beds. However, on the second day, we noticed an intermittent screeching mechanical noise which was more prevalent in the morning. When we complained to the front desk, they graciously moved us to two floors higher and further away from the elevator. However the noise still persisted. We then requested that someone from maintenance stop by. Maintenance knew at once that the noise was due to an ill fitting bearing in the elevator and stated that he would inform management that they should shut it down. He also stated that mgmt was aware, yet they never told us and moved to another room anyway. When we returned from dinner, we noticed that an elevator was out of service and we thought our problem solved. However the noise was still prevalent in our room. We called the front desk and they sent another maintenance person who also confirmed that the elevator should be shut down. Apparently, the elevator that was shut down, was not the one causing the problem, yet it was another elevator having maintenance work. Well the finally shut the correct elevator down. Front desk seemed to be unaware of the problem. You would think that if there was a maintenance issue, that the front desk would be made aware. And to add salt to the wound, I was put on hold by the front desk for over 10 minutes when I tried to call for assistance. I eventually hung up and went downstairs to discuss in person. Rated 3 out of 5 by disappointing Having room service and to pay the price we did I expected my food to be hot not cold. Called and they said they could take another order or take it off the bill. Of course I wanted to eat and they didn't replace everything just parts of it and the plates were warm and the food was cold. I just gave up and didn't order room service again except to order a bar item and it came uncovered and a very small. We also ate at the restrauant and we were the only three people in there and still waited a long time just to get our food and once again the plates were hot and the food cold. Must be a patterned at this location. Then we had to wait on the maid to come and clean our room she said she was confused because we had the door hanger on the door. The hanger was for the going green had nothing to do with not cleaning the room or do not disturb. I truly expected better from the Westin.. Then didn't even get the green points for placing the hanger on the door. Tried to pull the curtains to close and it was broken.... One more thing to have to pay for parking under a Westin is just a shame. The parking is under the hotel that should be already included with the stay it's a part of your building not a public parking area. Valet parking we had, yes they took the car but we had to go and get the car that is not valet parking.... I am really disappointed in this stay very disappointed. Then the elevator was stuck with me and my son in it pressed the button for help and I couldn't believe that it had hold music and then asked if it is a emergency and I said yes we are stuck in here and then hold music... unbelievable! Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice place; horrible wifi Overall, this was a really nice place to stay. Most of the people were very nice and helpful. When you could find someone at the Concierge desk (most times it was empty--why have one if there is no one there? Called on three separate occasions and the phone was never answered), they were helpful. I did have one that was somewhat rude. We did have a light bulb out in one of the fixtures but it wasn't a big deal. Just a few stories: I called about a week in advance to confirm our reservation and asked for a roll away bed. I was told it was marked on our reservation. When we checked in, they didn't have that info. But they did have one delivered fairly quickly. When it was being set up, the employee jammed the plug for the light in that corner and totally bent the prongs on the plug so that light did not work for the rest of our stay. We left for dinner. When we got back, the bed was gone!! After a trip to the front desk, it was brought back with a somewhat half hearted apology. But at least it was back. Another story: I emailed the hotel prior to our trip to confirm parking rates. I was told it would be $25 per night. When we checked out, we were charged $26 per night. Something we did not realize until too late. (I'm wondering why they even charge for parking. That should be included in the price of the hotel) Last story: we were told that wifi was available in the rooms for $12.95 per day (THAT'S AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT!) but the wifi was free in the lobby. That "free wifi" was HORRIBLE! Like I said, overall it was a very nice place to stay. I just wonder why nicer hotels feel they need to nickel and dime you for everything. June 9, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Dissapointed check out service The check out service lacked professionalism, courtesy and experince. The hotel over charged my debit card for more than the expected overage for debot card usage. When I called guest services the young lady saw the error and couldn't correct the mistake, so she transfrered me to the front desk as i explained my concerns the front desk clerk was confrontational, and seemed ti not understand my concern, after about a 5 min back and forth, we came to an understanding the amount was more than enough to cover my cost during my stay. Checking out in person at the front desk beacame a different ordeal, there seemed to be no one that I spoke too just 2 hours prior who went over the bill in detail with me, so this caused a stale mate because I was being told that I would be charged an additional amount which I disagreeded and showed that the amount that had already been authorized was way more than enough and after settling the balance the hotel would owe me. This cause a major delay and I had to catch a flight in 2 hours out of Dulles. I had to call my bank give verbal permission to have my personal banker speak with the front desk staff, and to my dismay my personal banker had to walk the front desk staff person through the processing of my bill explaining to the staff person that the 3 authorizations were more than the balane due and to use the authorization codes to complete their (WESTIN ARLINGTON GATEWAY) billing process. This was an ordeal that should have never occured. I have in the past choose this brand because of the way the brand values its guest but this location seems to lack the same motivation and brand vision as others. I will not stay at this location again and on my next buisness trip to the DMV area I will have to ensure this place is not an option. September 19, 2012
