This is why the Brookings Institution calls us the most walkable city in the country: When we say the world of Washington, D.C. is at our doorstep, we mean it—literally. Beginning with the White House just a 10-minute walk away, all of the city's most important institutions and attractions are steps from one another, making it easy to explore each one as you stroll down the length of the scenic Mall, from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. If you're exploring farther afield, the city's public transportation may be the most efficient network there, with the second largest rail transit and fifth largest bus system in the country—the Metrorail and buses will get you to all corners easily and comfortably (travel times may be slower during rush hour). Driving can be challenging due to limited parking and traffic conditions, but if you prefer to travel by car, Whatever/Whenever® will be more than happy to handle the arrangements.

There's no better way to get to W Washington D.C. from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) by taxi, airport shuttle or Metro, where either will whisk you to our doorstep in just 20 minutes. Or, Dulles Washington International Airport (IAD) is a not-too-distant option at simply a 45-minute drive away. Otherwise, Whatever/Whenever will also be pleased to take care of any of your transfers in style.

If you are traveling by car, please see driving directions, from the airport or any other location.

Getting Around

By Bus

    • Hours of operation: 24 hours

  • The Metrobus is another travel option, with a comprehensive network of routes and running frequent almost around the clock. Fares begin at $1.35 and bus drivers do not give change; weekly passes are also available. The D.C. Circulator bus is the best way to get to Georgetown, and can't be beat for easy and fast transportation in the busiest parts of the city, looping around most attractions and popular destinations. Fares are $1 at all times, and just 35 cents with a Metro transfer.

By City Rail System

  • For wandering across Washington, welcome aboard one of the country's cleanest, quietest and most comfortable public transportation systems, the Metrorail. The Metro's five lines will take you to almost every attraction, with clearly marked station and transfer signs, as well as indicators of the next arriving train. To enter or exit a station, buy a computerized farecard from vending machines near the entrance (credit cards and cash are both accepted).

Fares begin at $1.35 and vary between peak and non-peak hours, with the farthest destination costing $4.50. If you plan on traveling on the Metro frequently, consider purchasing a 1-Day Rail Pass or 7-Day Fast Pass for the most efficient commuting experience. With the exception of the Yellow Line, the Metro opens at 5am on weekdays and 7am on weekends, operating until midnight Sunday through Thursday and 3am on Friday and Saturday.

By Taxi

  • We don't recommend navigating the city's thick traffic and challenging parking situations, but taxis are a viable alternative if you need to get somewhere on wheels. Fares begin at $3 and are easily available in more populated areas.
