Rated 3 out of 5 by Good location, good hotel I chose to stay at the W San Diego, having stayed at other properties in NYC. My reservation was made over the phone through the Starwood Preferred Guest toll-free number. I was very impressed with the agent's ability to book my reservation and answer most of my questions. He was uncertain about some details for the Acura Experience and told me he would have the general manager contact me. Unfortunately, that never happened. As it turned out, the gentleman at the Acura desk in the hotel was super-friendly and went above and beyond to assist me. When I entered my room on the 17th floor, there was a musty odor, which may have been coming from the carpeting since it felt a bit wet underfoot. I was a bit disappointed in the miniature blow dryer provided by the hotel as an "amenity." The view from the room's windows was spectacular! The rooftop lounge/bar was also well appointed and had magnificent views of the sunset. While the lobby lounge was the only spot with free wi-fi, its trendy furniture and layout made using the space quite pleasant. All in all, I would return to this hotel. September 2, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great one day trip to San Diego the cleanliness and friendly staff were wonderful. There is a spacious gym and quality cardio machines. The Pool was a jr. pool, very small but served its purpose of lounging in the water. This W has the same quality as other W's I have stayed at but feels and is smaller. August 22, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by aloft at W price First off, the W San Diego has had the lobby and bars/restaurant recently renovated. The bartenders and wait staff are awesome! However, the management needs a renovation. More of a commitment to Whatever! than whatever/whenever. Why the attitude? From the front desk manager questioning the veracity of my wife's complaint, to the concierge pointing in a general direction rather than providing one of the maps sitting behind him on his desk, to the non-responsive GM Suzie Y. (left voicemail yesterday#, are proof that the San Diego, CA W's secret seven #promote a positive guest experience) remain secret! August 22, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Hotel Great Location The Hotel was a great place to stay when visiting San Diego. It is very modern with clean and practical rooms. The hotel staff are some of the most friendly and helpful I have come across at any hotel. August 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Daddy and Daughter trip to SD!! Excellent hotel...my daughter's first trip to San Diego and she enjoyed every minute of it. Loved the room although sharing a room with a 15 year old becomes pretty cramped quickly with all her stuff everywhere. The hotel is located within walking distance to great foods and a mall. Totally would recommend this place. August 20, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Recommended Very nice W in a great location. Awesome lobby if you need to get work done between meetings or simply need to get together with a colleague. Front staff was very attentive. No attitudes here which was quite nice! August 19, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great Location but service needs some improvements Hotel is very clean and upscale. Great location to all the tourist attractions. As a long time SPG member (a frequent traveler in the past), I do expect a little more from W Hotel: a) I asked for a late checkout on a Saturday (and I have 2 rooms). The service desk staff offered 12:30pm for the 1st room and 1pm for the 2nd room. How stupid can this be when I am traveling with my family. Am I supposed to send my kids home by themselves first. I declined the offer and checkout right away. b) Asked for direction for get some Asian food dinner. The service desk staff said someone from the Concierge would be more than happy to give me direction. Actually, she mentioned the concierge would have the information ready when I settled in. Went to the Concierge desk at 7:30 on a Friday night and no one was there. Waited for 20 min and no one showed up. Decided to eat at the hotel restaurant at the end. Other considerations and potential improvements: 1) Need to check the cleanliness of the hotel restaurant dinner room. I was seating by the window inside (not outside) and there were small mosquitoes or bugs flying around my red wine and food. Happened both at dinner and breakfast. 2) Hotel room is quite noisy at night. You can hear all the traffic and people screaming (is there a night club in the building) till 2-3am in the morning. Rated 5 out of 5 by nice hotel, clean and simple This hotel is nice and clean, but a little bit too simple. For example, there is no fridge nor coffee maker. Nevertheless, the bed is comfortable, and I enjoyed the stay. I stayed five nights, and the first night is a bit noisy. Not sure if it's the guest next door watching olympics or the outside. But the remaining days are quieter. Overall, it's a good place to stay. August 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Tanktop on a Rooftop The renovations to my favorite W Hotel are amazing. The staff is friendly and attentive. They are what customer service is about. I highly recommend anyone that is a W Hotel fanatic or who wants to visit San Diego stay at this hotel. We also enjoyed the exclusive Acura Experience. August 1, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by 2 night stay room assigned on the 12 th flr had stained / dirty carpet that you couldnt avoid , bathroom mirror light did not work ..after notifying front desk we were moved to 1318 which was cleaner but LCD TV failed , bathrm mirror light failed ( same as 12 th flr ) , the "Wondeful " room looks like a well used dorm room and you need a wench motor to pull the blinds.. aftercheck out an extra $70 tacked on the bill for Valet and didnt use....if you want to offer value to your customers these are items you should consider July 31, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Hotel was very sheek and clean staff was great, awesome customer service. Wish the heated pool was bigger (very small) more of a hang out- luke warm pool. no tv as shown in photo-its a picture frame. rooftop bar was awesome in the evening. Rooms were very sheek and clean shower had no door I spend time cleaning a lof to ensure there were no water stains or worse-a fall. no real views of anything but a torn down bldg on level 13. Acura Valet was an extra bonus! 5 minutes to pier or gaslamp area. more of a singles hotel-business oriented. but I went as a family and still felt very welcome by the staff. July 26, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Huge Disappointment! My boyfriend and I wanted to do a getaway vacation just to relax. The W Hotel in San Diego left us quite disappointed. We arrived late Tuesday night and were quite impressed with the decor. Upon settling in our room, we discovered a stain on the lid of the toilet and that the bathroom door wasn't working. While the stain was quite small, it was still visible and made me uncomfortable with using the facilities. I called the Whatever/Whenever to ask for toothpaste and that someone come to clean the bathroom. After Adriana apologized for the bathroom and assured me it would be taken care of, a person came within minutes to deliver the toothpaste and said someone would be right up to clean the bathroom. After waiting over 40 minutes, no one showed up. I called back down to Adriana and asked if this was something we could have taken care of. She again apologized and said she spoke to the maintainence manager and will have someone up immediately. This was about 2am. At 2:45 am when no one showed up, I called Adriana to inform her no one showed up and we were too tired to wait for someone to come take care of the restroom. She was very polite and understood that it was late and informed me it would be taken care of in the morning. A manager in the morning called me to apologize about the room being dirty and offered to move us into another room or have it cleaned, whichever we preferred. He also offered to take care of lunch if we would like but Adriana had already compensated us with parking so we politely declined. I called him as we were leaving to let him know the room was ready to be cleaned. Upon coming back that afternoon, the room was tidied up and the bathroom door fixed but the stain on the lid of the toilet remained as it was found the night before. At this point I took a picture of the stain and went down to the front desk to explain how unsanitary and uncomfortable I felt using this facility. She apologized and a manager came by to look at the photo and assured me he'd have someone up immediately to fix the issue. The maintainence manager came and I showed him where the stain was. He then had a housekeeper come up and said she would be able to assist me with whatever I needed. When I showed her the stain she said "that's it" and proceeded to clean and left. I felt her comment was very snide and rude. I understand the stain was small and something simple that I could have cleaned myself. The point is I did not make the mess and my room shouldn't have had a stain in it to begin with. The manager assures me the W Hotel prides itself on "fine combing" and looking at every little detail but yet this was missed twice by the maintainence team. I felt Adriana really did go above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay when she sent me a hand written apology and a cheese plate. Even though it eventually was resolved, I felt it had become a bigger inconvenience than it needed to be and I especially didn't appreciate the housekeeper's smart remark. I am very disappointed with our experience, especially since it was our first time. As a starwood preferred guest we had a wonderful time at the Westin in LA and was really looking forward to what the W Hotel had to offer. I wished our experience would have lived up to our expectations July 13, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by not up to standard I attempted to check in at 4:15 pm. I was told the room would not be available for at least an hour. I had to take a different room then offered. The carpet in the room was dirty . This is my first bad experience with SPQ hotels. July 11, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by I might just never stay at a W again after this experience! I should have known that our stay was doomed when before we even walked into the hotel we saw a sign that said "Labor Dispute- Immigrant Labor Abuse Here" posted out front. Below is a list of the many many issues we had with this hotel: 1. We got to the hotel at 1:00 pm and our room wasn't ready. So we went to the outside bar to eat and drink to wait on the room. By 3:00 pm, the guaranteed time for room availability, we had not heard from the staff about our room. We did not get into our room until after 4:00 pm. We were not offered any compensation for the hotel's failure to have the room ready other than one drink voucher (which we declined). 2. We were forced to eventually change into our swimsuits in the public restrooms so we could at least get a few hours of sun in the very tiny pool they had on the roof (on a different level and away from the bar and lounge chairs). We had a 21 month old with us so you can imagine how difficult that was with him and huge suitcase. 3. When we were checking in, there were several other people complaining....and waiting....and waiting. 4. The hotel lost one of our bags that it had stored for us and did not get back with us regarding its whereabouts until my husband went downstairs to actually wait on the bag. 5. When we did get our room, there was no crib. I asked for a crib when I booked the reservation months prior, once again when we checked in and yet again, when I called to find out why we had not received the crib. We finally received it sometime after 5:00 pm. 6. We called valet to have our car ready and waiting for us. It was never ready and waiting for us. It was like we never even called. 7. Someone actually attempted to open our door at 11:00 pm (thank goodness I had the external door lock on it) without even attempting first to knock. When they couldn't get in, the phone rang and it was room service indicating that we had ordered something and they were attempting to put in in our room. We hadn't ordered anything and had been sleeping for at least an hour. Who just opens the door anyway??? Needless to say, we felt like we were in the twilight zone. It was clear that the staff was not communicating with each other and truly didn't care about the hotel guests. We got absolutely no recognition for our SPG Gold status nor any apology for the issues described above. As soon as we got up, we got out of that hotel. Our experience was so bad that we are considering never staying at another W again, and we've stayed at plenty. My advice to you, do not stay here. You will be highly disappointed. July 7, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by This hotel has incredible service On the first day of our stay, the valet discovered that our rental car had a flat tire. He went above and beyond in attempting to help contact the rental company and arrange for another car. I can't say enough about the service not only of the valet but all the staff who were very attentive and friendly. We will definitely return. July 6, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by needs improvement Too long of a wait to get things done. Had to ask for a crib 3 times; took one hour to get a crib to the room; room keys did not work initially and had to wait half an hour to get new keys; asked for a connecting room since I had to rooms reserved and was told not avaialable; asked for a ADA equipped room, not available; did not make a didifference to have gold status with SPG; rooms do not even have a coffee machine!!disappointed overall. Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice Hotel Spent two night. Typical trendy W hotel. Staff were very friendly room was clean. Overall very happy. As a Gold member they did not upgrade my room. Other W hotels have. Ate room service. As expected food was very expensive and average at best, Organic chicken was dry. Nice location to Zoo/Park. June 28, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by W San Diego The hotel was under construction. The room and pool were very small. The check-in process took 20+ minutes and there was only one person in front of me. I supposed to stay 4 nights and changed to a different hotel after the first night. I was disappointed and will not stay at that property again. June 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent service Everything was great. Just the valet parking guy wasn´t there when i arrrived. Guess you should hire one (or two) more June 14, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Worst Customer Service The W Hotel has always been a favorite of mine until recently when the hotel refused to address my issue regarding incorrect charges made to my account. I was told via phone that someone at the W would contact me to rectify this situation within 48 hours of my initial contact but did not hear anything until I tried again (after the 48 hour period) and even then the representative was not helpful at all. I feel this level of guest rapport is unacceptable for a 4-5 star hotel like the W. June 5, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by I wish I would've known about the construction Only my second time in San Diego. Five nights for work and needed to be close-ish to the Convention Center. Firstly, the rate I was able to secure was fantastic and assuming you can get something this low, book it right away! If the rate is "W-high", then I wouldn't recommend (based on the below). Some Pros: - Staff was nice and helpful. On my second night, a suite became available and they upgraded me, even moved my stuff while I was away. - Nice views from the higher floors, though non of pure ocean/bay. - Once the renovations are done, I'm sure that the public areas this property will be spectacular. The Cons I Experienced: - Major renovation/construction occurring during my stay which I did not know at time of booking. They did the best they could to maintain "business as usual", but it wasn't enough - no lobby to use for business meetings, a 5 ft wide/50ft long hallway to pass through with luggage creating awkward situations. - The gym ("SWEAT"), which brand new, never seemed to be working. One morning, two other guys and I were there, machines wouldn't turn on, we called from our cells phones -- no one came for 25 minutes to address the issue. - Showers are those walk-ins with no door....creating a lovely river in your bathroom every morning...there's no way around it. Unintelligent design. - The interiors of the rooms verge on being kitsch. It's also apparently that they're constantly painting and repainting...which makes it feel quite cheap. To summarize, it's not quite up to the high standards of The W brand, but I'd consider staying again if the rate were low enough. June 3, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Overcharge I booked for a supposedly fabulous king size room with a bay view. I ended up with having neither. The rate was 538 USD + Tax per night !!! That was possibly three times of the actual price. Therefore it was a very bad experience. I have never been overcharged to such a degree. May 26, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by The W was Cool! My compadre, Toot, and I stayed at The W on Weds, 5/16, the last night of an epic 8 day trek through SoCal. The Valet service for my '12 SS Camaro rag top was prompt and enthusiastic., I told the driver he could 'kick it' a little if he wanted. We were welcomed warmly and with good humor at check-in at the makeshift lobby. The Hotel is in the midst of renovations. The whole place is going for a hip laid back SoCal vibe and it works. The room had a few 'trippy' features, such as a kalidescope, a psychedelic paper weighty thing, and a blackboard fully equipped with chalk and erasers. The room had a nicely stocked mini bar and an additional box of goodies and 'personal supplies'. The beds were the most comfortable of our trip, including other hotels and resorts. The room did have a sliding door for the bathroom but you can not see through the glass. The shower was fine and our shower curtain kept the floor dry. Toot had a date, but Old School Gregg and Rosalita accompanied me back to the 2nd floor "Roof Top Bar" after a night of Margaritas in Old Town. The newly renovated bar had a cool, laid back ambiance, with couches lining one wall and other seating areas scattered about in little clusters, some in and around tent like cabanas. They were playing chill out jams and there were cool tower type heaters with flames. G and R both said they'd be coming back. Noise was not a problem, sirens are a part of life in the big city. Breakfast was overpriced, like $16 for essentially a 'continental breakfast'. I had a makeshift egg sandwich thayt cost me about 15 bucks. Check out was a breeze and the courteous staff wished us well and asked us if there was anything they could do for us even after check out. Overall a very good stay 4 1/2 stars! We'll be back next SoCal journey. . May 20, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Unsatisfactory First, the hotel lobby was getting remodeled and they had a make-shift lobby set up. I understand this is temporary though. But the service and room comfort should not have been compromised. The room smelled of smoke or some other stench and I called down to the front desk and they said they would send "style" right up. I waited and waited and no one came. Then on our way out we stopped by the front desk to let me know we were unsatisfied and they said they would send style right up and evaluate the room and take care of the matter or relocate us. When we returned, they said they had taken care of the matter and there was no need to relocate rooms. The room was made-up, but the smell remained. Being late we ended up just dealing with it. The bath room is one of the most poorly designed I've ever seen. There is no door and a wide opening that allows mammoth amounts of water to pour onto the tile in the bathroom. We had to use all our towels to soak up and wring out and mop up all the water. On top of that, the bath room door got stuck when it closed. My girlfriend got stuck in the bathroom 3 times and I had to pry it open. After three times, we conceded to going to the bathroom with the door half open. Completely unsatisfactory. May 16, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Average at best Having read the reviews on the hotel prior to my stay, and combining that with the price, I had expectations of a very nice hotel. I was disappointed with what I found. I was on the 5th floor and I had mulitple police/emergency sirens every night (stayed 3 nights). The rooms are not very quiet. I could hear people talking in adjoining rooms as well. While the lobby is obviously being renovated, the rooms are old. The pool is tiny, and the execise room has just a few machines. Overall it was a very ordinary hotel, that I am not sure is worth the price. May 14, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by WOW as always It still feels like home at the W. thank you. May 14, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Hotel features the hotel was under renovation during our stay, but was not a big problem. Staff was very courteous and helpful. I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again. May 7, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Worst shower ever Stay here if you don't mind experiencing the worst shower/bathroom design ever and don't mind **inches** of water on the bathroom/entry way carpeted room floor **everytime** you shower. What were they thinking designing their showers? A 7-inch hole in the glass side? A single-option showerhead that soaks the whole room? Water running into the hotel room entryway? I stayed for 4 nights with 5 co-workers on different floors and we ALL complained of the shower design disaster. I told one of the staff and she thanked me and begged me to tell the manager (as I was running to catch a cab to the airport), saying every other guest she's talked to has complained of the same thing! So fix it. You're probably going to have a horrible mold problem and/or a slip and fall lawsuit on your hands very soon. I wouldn't stay here again because it wasn't comfortable to come home to a still sopping wet floor every day after work. (And I feel bad for the housekeeping staff who probably know/have seen the worst of it.) April 15, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Hip W Hotel - Quiet Part of Town I stayed at this hotel in April after attending a business function at another hotel. It's in a quiet part of town (I was there Sat-Mon) but you are close enough to walk to Horton Plaza and some of the restaurants. Upon check in I was given a Cool Corner room which was large and very nice. The hotel was sold out Sat night and the lobby was very busy as it seemed to be one of the "it" places to be. The front desk staff was pleasant enough but didn't talk much. I don't know if this hotel had a club lounge and it was mentioned that my SPG number was on file. April 5, 2012
