At Torre de Palma Wine Hotel in Portugal’s Alentejo region, first-time hoteliers Ana and Paulo Rebelo pay homage to the adage “to live like Romans”. The former pharmacists have all the ingredients that make for good living: elegant interiors in perfect harmony with nature, wine tastings from the hotel’s own 14th century vineyard and winery, an indulgent spa, and a restaurant that serves Alentejo’s best delicacies as well as offering culinary workshops. Ride a Lusitano horse, have a picnic in the vineyards or surrounding nature, swim indoors or outdoors, or run through the property’s orchard . . . whatever you do, this is glorious isolation at its best and you couldn’t be in better hands.

Hoteliers Paulo Barradas Rebelo and Ana Isabel Rebelo weren’t always in the hospitality business. In fact, they met while training to be pharmacists and Paulo ended up holding an executive position at Bluepharma. Although hospitality was never their game, they did both have a passion for the region of Alentejo and its history, which is what led them to open Torre de Palma Wine Hotel. “The farm was in ruins, but we fell in love with it,” Ana explains. “It simply had to be saved. And once we took it on, we wanted to do it in a way that respected and celebrated the heritage and history here.”
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
Adhering to the Alentejo region’s prevailing architectural style, Torre de Palma is characterized by whitewashed walls, concrete slab roofs, masonry walls, and a traditional setup whereby low-lying buildings are clustered around a central ancient tower. The hotel was created from the remains of a house that dates back to 1338 and was renovated by architect João Mendes Ribeiro. Inside, elegant furnishings contrast with design quirks while ornamental pieces, handpicked by Rosarinho Gabriel, contextualize the hotel with reference to its home region of Alentejo.
