Erdos or Ordos, which means “the city of palaces” in Mongolian, is situated within the Ordos Loop of the Yellow River, surrounded by two large deserts in China’s southwestern Inner Mongolia. The Four Points by Sheraton Erdos is conveniently located along the city’s main avenue, Etuokexi Street, in Zhengdong Plaza, home to top offices, shopping and entertainment. Ordos Airport (DSN) is just one hour away by car.
Have fun while learning about the area’s history at the impressive tomb of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol empire. A cultural relic, the mausoleum’s magnificent Mongolian architecture comprises six halls, several corridors, and a five-metre statue commemorating the 13th-century ruler.
Soak up the incredible landscapes of the Ordos Grassland and partake in one of the traditional local sports, including wrestling, horseback riding, and archery. Refuel afterwards with native Mongolian cuisine featuring lamb. Or sip milk tea or milk wine while enjoying an indigenous dancing and singing performance. The grassland also offers overnight stays in yurts, the portable housing that Mongolian nomads have used for thousands of years.
Sunrise or sunset visits to the nearby deserts are also breathtaking, as is playtime on the shimmering sand dunes of the Singing Sand Ravine. Ride the “ski lift” to the top of the 100-metre-high slope, jump into a sled, and slide down, marveling at the booming, echoing sounds. Other fun activities include: sand boarding, desert motor vehicle rides, desert paragliding, horseback riding, and camel riding. For full immersion into the native ways, dress up in a traditional Mongolian outfit and have your picture taken before browsing the souvenirs, including the region’s famous cashmere.
At Four Points by Sheraton Erdos, we understand if you want to go exploring. Just don’t stay away too long.
