Early in the 1900s in the Valley of the Sun, just ten miles from Phoenix, a small frame house stood at the base of Camelback Mountain. On a trip through the Southwest, painter Jessie Benton Evans passed the structure and was smitten, eventually purchasing it along with 40 acres of surrounding desert. In addition to renovating the house, Evans gifted 12 acres of land to her son and daughter-in-law, who built an adobe house in 1926, eventually expanding it to accommodate visitors and overnight guests.

Discreet and enchanting, the Jokake Inn welcomed vacationing Easterners, titled foreigners, industrial titans, and local friends from November through April. Its signature entrance towers still stand on The Phoenician Resort grounds today, harkening back to an uncomplicated era of gracious hospitality.

More than a decade later, the cosmetics mogul Elizabeth Arden was similarly inspired by the Jokake Inn’s pristine location, purchasing the land and in 1946 opening the world-renowned Maine Chance Spa on the very spot where The Canyon Suites now stands. Taking the inn’s acclaimed hospitality to the next level, Maine Chance pampered prestigious guests, celebrities, and royalty from around the world. In February 2007, carrying on the resort's exclusive tradition, The Canyon Suites became a member of The Luxury Collection by Starwood Hotels and Resorts.

Today, The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician Resort—an enchanting resort within a resort—evokes the heritage and grandeur of its predecessors with signature old Southwest spirit and elegance.
