Rated 5 out of 5 by blarmon Awesome hotel
My wife and I just spent 3 nights at this property. Platinum status was recognised by the staff. Upgraded room with decent view of the town. Daily breakfast at La Providence was excellent, only second to some of mainland Europe's high category properties. Very good breakfast service and attentive staff. Very good gym area with a good variety of equipemnt for a hotel gym. This is not your standard treadmill in a room gym. The hotel is conveniently located just a few minutes walking from the main train station and a few minutes from bars and restaurants. We ate the the lobby bar one evening and it was very good. Also the staff made good off site dining recommendations,. Kudos to the management of this property for such a clean, effecient, welcoming property. For SPG junkies don't be turned off by the category two rating. Rating doesn't do the property any justice but it does help you get a great rate. Hotel is a good stop off if traveling from Dublin to the west (Galway, Wesport etc).

We stayed here on our first night during our most recent Ireland trip - and a few days later on our way back to Dublin. Overall, great SPG recognition with an excellent and friendly staff. Thanks especially to Natasha. First time, due to platinum status, we were upgraded to an eighth-floor corner room in the towers. On the return, upgraded to an even nicer room with sweeping ceiling-to-floor windows on the ninth floor in the towers. The tower rooms are very quiet, spacious, nicely furnished and decorated. But it is a little bit of a maze and an elevator change to get there from the lobby. We did copy the hotel instructions on driving directions from the Dublin airport, as our GPS did not list the hotel by name nor address. When walking near the castle area in Athlone, we overhead a car stop across the street and ask pedestrians where the Sheraton was - so make sure you GPS has the hotel location, or your have good directions or a map. The hotel parking is in the lot under the hotel (and adjacent shopping mall). It is very easy to get to. There is only minimal space in front of the hotel/lobby to park when checking in, so if it is full, one option is to just drive into the parking lot, very close to the lobby entrance - on the right side if looking towards the hotel, clearly marked with a Sheraton Parking sign. Get your parking ticket upon entrance, drive to the special Sheraton parking area on the same level, push the contact button and tell them you are a guest. Park your car and then go through the clearly marked back entrance and up the elevator to the lobby. The club lounge is very nicely done, but has minimal offerings. Happy hours are slices of meat, cheese and bread - sodas, chips and cookies rest of the time. They had an SPG cocktail reception on Sunday night (wine and cheese) - which I think is a very nice gesture on the management's part - even though there was very minimal attendance (me) that night. I have a feeling that they normally do not have a high number of elite SPG guests - yet! On both stays, the hotel staff was very busy (Rugby tournament one night - several large groups/meetings the other), yet we never felt ignored nor rushed. Buffet breakfast was average for Ireland hotels of this caliber. Bathrooms in the tower rooms were large, spacious and I appreciate the separate walk-in shower! Wifi in the room was a bit "spotty" the first time, but quite satisfactory in the second room. A minor negative point for me, but a very important point for my wife is in regard to all of the recessed ceiling lights. In the fist room (468) there was minimal light present over the bathroom sink. In room 473, the bulb directly over the sink had been replaced with a lower wattage one than the others, so it was even worse. However, all in all, a very pleasant surprise and I would certainly recommend the Sheraton Athlone to anyone (SPG member or not) needing an overnight stay (or longer) anywhere in this area.

I highly recommend this property. I stayed here as a half-way point between Dublin and Galway. I had stayed at another SPG property in Dublin and was hesitant about Athlone because of the points required for redemption. This hotel far exceeded my expectations. They maintain a wonderful property. The front desk staff is outstanding and truly recognized my standing as a Starwood Gold Member. When back in Ireland, I will be sure to stay again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by peabee Great hotel in Athlone
We stayed for 2 nights on our way back from Galway to Dublin. The hotel is very impressive looking - when entering through the underground car park it reminded me of hotels I've stayed in in America. We were ungraded to a room on the 7th foor with views of Athlone. The restaurant was very nice, we both enjoyed out meal and the waitress was excellent. We had drinks in the hotel bar on both nights as there was entertainment. We enjoyed our stay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by johnW Outstanding Hotel Experience
We Based ourselves here for our month in Ireland staying about 20 days in all over 4-5 stays.
The hotel is in 2 parts the tower rooms are quieter than the rest.
We were upgraded for our Platinum Status to a junior suite with access to the lounge.
This is properly the best staff experience we have had at any hotel & we have stayed in a lot of hotels, they were outstanding especially Dan & Deirdre,
Although its only a 3 star its very comfortable and well serviced.
This is a first for all excellent below, I do not give this lightly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by moocow1976 Could do better
Beautiful hotel, very efficient and pleasant staff, however bar food prices were too high for the quality of the food received e.g. nachos on the light bites menu, basically a plate of nachos with chopped tomatoes and spring onions, topped with melted cheese, guacamole NOT fresh!! Disappointing quilt on bed, not only too thin but also too small, only just reached the edge of the bed. Rooms were very clean but did not have a guest info booklet. Overall a pleasant stay but definitely could do better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by mtg2013 hotel policy re cancellation in emergancy
booked room for 2 people with breakfast- the night before we were due to book in my friend got sick and ended up in hospital. the hotel were contacted but they have a 24 hour notice of cancellation. although this seemed extreme i was charged the full balance on the account- when i asked for a discount i was told tough luck. i then asked if they could at least reduce it by the cost of the breakfast 12.95 but no. room cost me 130 euro and when i check online today i can book two single beds for €79 euro in total. i find it hard to believe they couldn't have done something. i did not scream or shout or demand to speak to manager but am voting with my feet , will not stay here again going back to my usual hotel where customers are treated as a customer and not just a number. a bit of flexabity would have gone along way here.they didn't even ask how my friend was doing. never to stay again so much for being a starwood preferred customer.

My boyfriend and I visited this hotel this past fall, and we had a great stay. I was given a wonderful suite with a beautiful view of Athlone. The room was everything we could have wanted, and the staff members were all very accomodating. The gym is fantastic as well!
